Looking at getting a mid-80's chevy dually with a 454 and a b&m blower on it to use as my tow rig. Would like so input on what you guys think about some concerns.
1. Towing up the mountains(i.e. callentae) will the motor beeing under boost for extended periods of time hurt it?
2. I know it's going to get bad mileage, but the owner now tells me he's towed his 24' boat(about 4000lbs) to Charleston and got about 11 mpg's. This seems high I firgue it's really 7-8mpg.
Any input would be great. And I know it'll be said, but no more than I'll be using and towing with it I cannot justify buying a new diesel( takes alot of mileage difference to make up a big truck payment when i make 6 trips a year), and don't want the headache of an older diesel.

a mid-80's chevy dually with a 454 and a b&m blower-is going to be a headache in itself. usually, not always, high performance=low reliability your 6 trips a year could be ruined by a long tow home with tow rig+trailer+rig not a fun thing to have happen.

Is this a stock 454, rebuilt, forged pistons, did bubba put it together. I would answer these q's before even thinking about it.

what are you going to pay for it, i would rather have a 2wd reg cab newer diesel, or a chevy gas 2500 also newer. I think i nice truck could be picked up and suit your needs for around 8k. this would be less than 80k and and in the 01 range for a diesel expect to pay around 11.5.

I'm doing some trading. The motor has about 15k on it since rebuild. The build was done by a local respected shop. The owner has a build sheet with all the goodies. Basicly rebuild with quality stuff and lowered the compression for the blower build. I'll be into for ALOT less than the money you metioned with no money out of pocket. I realize that there is more man. on one of these, but so is the 2 trucks I'm geting rid of.

how much pressure is it running? and what is the base compression ratio (non-boost)?
We do blown BBC's all the time in marine. They'll go 1000-1500hrs
with good care.

Didn't dig into the specs that much. I think he said around 8.5:1 on the compression at 8lbs of boost. I'll get more info tomorrow. This was built for him a tow rig, but he sold his boat and no longer needs it.

I wouldn't worry to much at those numbers. If you trust the build go for it. Most of the little rice rockets are running more than that on smaller rods.
for reference, the diesels run around 30 psi stock

So no need to worry about keeping it boosted for extended period of time and am I thinking about right on the milage?

you'll have to look at the radiator. My experience with boosted BBC's have an unlimited cooling system. Just opinion, but the blower might help it get a little better mileage towing than an NA BBC. I'd guess 7-10.

Years ago there was episode on one of the car/truck shows where they did the same thing. MPG went from 9-10 to 14. Always wondered why it wasn't more of an option for towing.

Id say do it, those bm blowers dont produce a huge amount of psi anyways do they? I think this would be bad ass.

Just give me the Blower... that should help. Sorry I dont have any real helpful info just yankin your chain. FREE BUMP

Cool thanks guys, I'm going for it. Hey if nothing else the motor will make a powerplant for a buggy....
