Hi All,

A friend of mine and I are looking at doing a rescue mission, where we need to head up to Missouri to help his sister. Their in the middle of a move with an over loaded trailer and we're planning to head up and off load some of their stuff and pull it back for them.

What we're looking for is a place where we can rent a box trailer. We've looked at U-Haul, but their trailers are a little small for what we need to do. Anyone know of a place that rents larger trailers. We will be towing with an F250 with a standard hitch, so we're not looking for something huge, just something bigger than what they have at U-Haul.

Any input would be appreciated.

I think for that situation you might be ahead to rent a van or small box van from a rental place and just drive it up/back.. Ya you will take a MPG hit but just think of the less wear and tear on your truck...

Thanks, we've looked at that, but between milage and the rental (not even looking at fuel costs), the price is high enough to look at this option. At this point we're looking at loading about 5000# of stuff on whatever we can get.

With the largest Uhaul trailer and the bed of a truck you can move a 2 bedroom house with good packing. How much stuff is she trying to move?

There is a place on the side of 40/85 around greensboro/ winston that rents them last time we got one I think it was a 8k to 10k 8x20 and not much money a few hundred for a week or so I will look and see but they sell them to maybe someone knows who they are????
Good people we returned it with a little drag damage and they said ok no problem that is going to happen to rental stuff..
They had a add in a biker mag around raleigh.\\

I agree that with proper packing you can get a crap load in those trailers. From what I'm being told they've got about 10,000-12,000# of stuff. I have no idea other than that.

Problem is, U-Haul only rates their largest trailer to carry about 3,000#, so we don't want to over load it. The problem right now is their trailer IS overloaded and has caused problems already. We're trying to avoid that by sharing the load.

If you have a truck don't do the box truck the one way drop and fuel plus miles will kill you.
Your talking a 15 -20 hr drive it takes me 17 hrs to get to KC when I go out west.

buy a trailer and sell it when you get home.

really.

We considered that. If we didn't have to be on the road by tomorrow afternoon, it would be more feasible. Looks like we're going to go the U-Haul route. Anything will help them at this point, so we'll be smart loading the trailer and the back of the truck and high tail it home.

I'm just hoping we can grab some ribs if we have to go as far as KC. :D

Thanks for the input everyone.

Pick up a u-haul here for a daily "around town" rental.... they're $20-40 bucks a day or something like that. A hell of a lot cheaper than renting one wherever and bringing it back here one-way.

The large tandem axle trailer they have will hold a lot of stuff if it's tightly packed. The biggest trick is getting enough tongue weight as you load it.

Edit: I just looked them up. The big 6x12' box trailer (biggest they make) is $30/day. The small trailers are $10/day.

Thanks. Yeah, I think the 6x12 is what we got. We are renting here and pulling it there and back. I don't think he went with the local only rental, simply because that can cost you if you have troubles with the trailer down the road. If we tell them we're going out of town and we lose a tire or worse, it sucks, but U-Haul has to get us a replacement.

last tow dolly i rented was an in town rental, and i blew a tire in the middle of nowhere virginia around midnight. they sent someone out to repair/replace it, no charge.

i don't think the in town rental means you have to keep it in town, just that you're renting/returning to the same place.

Cool, yeah, we found that out when we went to rent it.

The U-Haul trailer worked fine. We left town Friday around 6pm, got to St. Louis around 5am, moved stuff around, repacked a little, grabbed a shower and breakfast and headed back. The trip back was a little slower with kids involved, we were back in Charlotte by 1AM Saturday night/Sunday morning.
