What makes a torque wrench torque/click? Can you fix a broken torque wrench? For some reason mine all of a sudden stopped clicking, so now it only works like a regular racheting wrench. Just wondering if this can be fixed.

im pretty sure there is a spring inside it. So if the spring is broke you prolly wont be able to fix it. I bought a 40 dollar one from advance with 1/2 drive that works really well

John I bought a craftsman, used it for one job, sit in tool box for several years, needed it again, go it out, first pull, it locked up. Guess what, the clicker craftsman types have only a year warranty. oh well. I feel for ya

Well dang, I thought all Craftsman tools for lifetime guarantee. That stinks. I guess it's off to the tool store soon for me. I've got a good 2 years of use out of mine, so that's not that bad.

I think the Cobalts have a lifetime warranty. Don't remember if it's Lowes or Home Despot tho. Give 'em a call before you run out...

Kobalt is Lowes, Husky is Home Depot.
I think they both have a lifetime warranty, but I thought Craftsman did too. Somehow Sears excludes torque wrench from the 'hand tools' classification  I guess I can see that; otherwise you'd get some yahoo using it as a breaker bar :shaking:

thats all a crapsman torque wrench is good for...a breaker bar. do yourself a favor and get a nice snap on or mac torque wrench

I use a $15 Harbor Freight chinese knockoff bar. Works every time. Of course, who knows if the torque specs are right... but it clicks every time!

The discussion leads to the question - how exactly does it fail? Does the spring lose tension? Been told you should always reset it to 0 (or close) after use, maybe for thsi reason?

You can use mine, just pop on over. Also did you lock it after adjusting to correct torque?

www.bluetools.com

located in Greensboro NC, They sell the Torque wrenches you buy off the Snappy truck, just without the mark-up and the bling sticker

Consolidated Devices Inc. is a Snap-On company, this is the brand of torque wrenches sold by Blue Tool

I bought an Inch/pound dial torque wrench for setting up pinion preload about 4 years ago, was $118, Snappy was $300 for the same tool.

nice site, lots of neat tools.

Yeah I always reset mine to 0 torque when not in use, and I'm pretty sure I had it locked up. I took it all the way down to 10 lbs, and tested it on my lug nuts and it never clicked, and they're torqued to 85 lbs.

the cheap harbor frieght ones work well

They are free at autozone... not sure how accurate they are. But through the loaner tool you can buy, keep indefinately, and if you would like your money back, or break it, simply return it to the store. There is no time limit or anything. A reciept isn't even needed. -Tim

Back when i was a whirleybird wrench, the original tech manual said to set them to minimum after each use. That was later changed to 20-30% of it's setting range. Apparently, having a little tension on the spring is better than no tension.

You can say what you want about the military, but (especially in aviation) they make sure the tools are right! It was nice to have my own torque wrench calibrated once a year, too.. :p

YMMV, JMHO, etc.. :fuck-you:
