I have an 84 B2 with a 2.8 v6. just put a new alternator, valve cover gaskets, battery and numerous others into it. tried starting it the other day and it just made a rapidly repeating clicking. sounded like it might be the starter messing up?

all ideas would be appreciated

thanks

have a buddy try tapping the starter lightly with a hammer while you crank it. you said new battery, but i would double check the voltage (not running and during cranking).

alright. thanks. what would tapping the starter do? like would it maybe knock something in place thats not?

the pinion may not be engaging to the flywheel. sometimes tapping the starter will help the solenoid to engage, which pushes the pinion out to turn the flywheel.

i heard xj's are super prone to cracking their "frame"?? Especially if you don't have the title in your name...got the issue figured out, thanks for the help

i wish, its got a duraspark conversion, and ive got an early bronco 44 to throw under it in the future
