I was on vacation this past week so i thought i would do a little wheeling. I was headed to my parents place in the mountains anyway, so i thought i would make a little side trip to Brown Mountain on Monday. We had a good time with no problems other than leaving my map in the Dodge. The trail signs can be a little missleading when they are broken off and laying in the woods

I had been to brown mountain one time before, several years ago, and didn't stay very long due to time conflicts. The trails that you can ride in a truck are longer than i expected. We were there almost 3 hours and covered about 90 percent of the allowed trails. Its definetly a better place than i had thought. Not very challenging, but enough to keep it interesting in a stock or lightly modded rig.

I would say it is a good place to go if you are in the area, and have a stock or lightly modded rig. I wanted to do something fairly easy since it was just me and my wife, and i knew there wouldn't be many people around on a monday. Turned out to be a fun little trip.

I am still trying to get a meeting set up with the rangers out there. There are tons of trails that have been closed for years up there. I am hoping we can get a few more opened up. With 5 or 6 new trails, I think Brown could easily rival URE.

The trails that are closed, are they still open to atvs or are they closed altogether? I've heard several people say there are some difficult trails there, at least on an atv.

The ones I am talking about are closed all together. I know there are some more difficult ATV trails and I have "heard" of people running them at night while camping there, but I can neither confirm nor deny the accuracy of such a statement...

Haha. And there are still miles of decent trails that are open to atv's and dirt bikes that are plenty wide for jeeps and such.

Brown Mountain sounds like a great place for a rookie ride. I looked up Brown Mountain with my mapping software and all I could find was Broun Mountain Beach outside of lenoir. Am I looking in the right place?

The directions are: Hwy 90 west to colletsville--go past the gas station and school. turn left onto adako road and go 4.4 miles. the entrance is on your right just over a small rise in the road.

Let me know if you're able to set this meeting up. I would be glad to help as much as I can. I have a couple of random contacts in the forest service and local govt. that might be able to assist.

It's been several years since I was up there. But once on the way out, we stopped and talked with one of the rangers. He told us that we could go on any trail we could fit through. No this isn't official or anything, but, worth stopping a ranger and talking to him and seeing what was Ok with him and what wasn't.

On another note. I do know there are many trails up there that are not open as well. When I was 16 or so I used to ride the mountain then before there was an ORV park.
Went in in a different location and from what I remember, it was a lot more challenging than what is there now.

It would be awesome to have a "Tellico" type area closer to home.

deebo,

Brown Mtn. is an awesome place for a rookie ride. It's a fun ride that doesn't really pose any real danger for carnage. There are some sections that are rocky and mildly technical, but nothing that will destroy a decent 4x4. Any 4x4 with some decent 31" tires and a competent driver can go pretty much everywhere on Brown Mtn.

Are there more trails open to trucks/jeeps? I went last year when uglyjeepoffroad got a trip set up and there wasnt much to the trails we were allowed on. Yes, it was fun and i bet if you make it up there when the leaves are changing it gotta be real nice view from up there.

well......

where is this place exactly?? How far from the raleigh or greensboro or charlotte areas??? maybe we could do a big fan club support gathering meet and greet and help them open a bunch of old trails that are hard. GREAT IDEA!!!!!! Keep us all informed. Thanks.

KRAWLER :driver: :D

PS. You all know that there were a bunch of EXTREME and really hard trails at uwharrie back in the old days too. I use to hear stories from a service ranger about a trail they closed when a few people died and got hurt mostly due to drinking and driving. I wish they would open a bunch of "EXTREME" trails at uwharrie so we could get a tough place to play locally. Lets try to see if we can open more trails at URE too. bye.
