Ok i had some small rust spots and I sanded them down and used some spray can primer to cover it up. Its been about 8 weeks and the rust is starting to appear again. Is there something im supost to put on it to keep it from comming back? it is a small areas like paint chips that rusted over a long period so its kinda pitted but small like 1/8- 1/4 areas.

Get a soft wire wheel for your grinder and get the metal as clean as you can. Then get either some self etching primor or epoxy primor and spray that on the bare metal before you prime it with regular sandable primor. Make sure you strip a good two or three inches around the rust spots to make sure nothing creeps back in the edges too. I did the same thing you did with my baja bug Im building and ended up having to sand the entire body and frame back to bare metal and start over.

Paint.. Mine started rusting with primer on it, in areas that never had rust. once I painted it, no more problems. :)

Yeah, regular sandable primer doesn't seal out moisture. You have to paint it.

x2. Some primers are not totally water proof and are not meant to be used as a top coat. Maybe epoxy primer is waterproof? I don't know. But I do know that a shiny paint top coat is waterproof. :)

I spray PBBlaster all over the rust that I come in contact with. Not sure if many other people do that. Other than that I would say spray it with a rustoleum type of paint to prevent any further rust and you should be good.

there is a permatex product called restore, we use it at work a lot. its pretty pricey, $20 wholesale for a small sized bottle, but IT WORKS. you paint it on then spray a few coats of rattle can over it and it will stop rust in its tracks.

There is a product called POR-15 that you apply directly over the rust. It catalyzes the rust to stop it and then hardens to seal out the moisture. I've seen it used on everything from diff housings to frames and floorpans. It should work on exterior sheet metal also but they advise a top coat of paint to protect it from UV fading.
