Can I legally remove the soot trap in my 98 6.5L TD f-vin truck?

So I'm doing some work to my 98 2500 Chevy to make it a little happier. It is a 6.5L TD with the F-vin.

It has the soot trap in the exhaust. I want to remove it because it is a worthless restriction.

Can I legally remove it, since my truck is a 3/4 ton diesel and it isn't technically a cat?

Main problem is finding someone to remove it, and being able to pass inspection without it.

Strictly by the book, no you can't remove it. However, most inspectors don't even look at diesel exhaust as long as it's basically intact.

I was about to do the same thing...a buddy of mine just put a 4" setup on a '96 that he scored for 500 bucks with a bad PMD. Sounds pretty good! I never even knew they had a soot trap in them and I'm a die hard GM guy, but I've also never owned one. I'd be willing to bet hardly anyone that would inspect that truck would know it ever had one, much less notice it MIA.

You have the worst luck with vehicles, I swear. Electric fans, ftmfw!

I have heard of "cleaning" an obstructed soot trap, was so clean afterward that it acted more like a resonator, sounded pretty decent, and ran well. An unlisted diagnostic service (secret menu option) offered at some dealerships.....in uh..... Texas or somewhere......

An old broom stick will do a good job of cleaning out a clogged one.

New exhaust is here. Compared to the old one, this thing is massive. Should breathe a lot better now.

And yes, I stuck my arm in the pipe for reference.

4" Diamond Eye is what I've got on the Dodge. I used a Donaldson muffler or something on mine, though.

Told you! Are you running a muffler or is it straight piped? Very soon, I will be making another attempt at running exhaust out the back of my truck. I went with stacks for a while because real estate under my truck is scarce....but I'm growing increasingly tired of the soot covering everything in the bed, on my trailer, and getting all over the truck. Plus, they're right behind the cab and it's kinda loud.

In short, I'm pretty envious...

I went with a muffler. It is a little louder, but not a ton. It has a really deep tone at idle and overall the sound is a lot more aggressive.

But I am happiest of all that I can hear that turbo, I hated I couldn't hear it at all before. I was grinning ear to ear when I heard it whine.

Oh you're supposed to look at the exhaust when you do an inspection? oops :D
