Can somebody help me drill a big hole?

I have an upper control arm assembly with a tube that has a 1" ID. I also have a 1 11/64" drill bit with a #4 MT shank. Well, a #4 MT shank is bigger than I thought it was and I don't have any drill or drill press large enough to turn it. Is there anybody out there that can help me? (In a perfect world they would be somewhere near Apex but I'll take what I can get.)

If you're down near Gastonia anytime, I can do it for a Pepsi and a bag of M&M's (unless the hole is really long, and then I might need a Gatorade).

The assembly is welded together and can't be chucked up in a lathe.

jeepinmatt: I'll keep the Gastonia offer in mind, so far you're the only person that can do it but at 3 hours away I'm going to see if anybody closer pops up. Thank you for the offer.

my brother lives in Raleigh and is most likely coming to Charlotte this weekend...

if you can find a way to get it back to Raleigh, he could probably bring it here and I'll get it to jeepinmatt...just an idea...

How big is a #4?

It's pretty big, maybe 3/4" but it's tapered so I'm not sure where I'd measure it. I took a picture of it next to a hammer.

Dang woody, I have the drillbit, tap, and everything you need :)

I have a 1 11/64 bit, and the 1 1/4-12 tap. My drillbit is 1/2" shank. The guy that is drilling/tapping my links has it right now, but if you can get the stuff to me he can probably drill/tap it for you. How hard will it be to bolt your control arm assy. in a drill press? Drilling/tapping something that big is gonna be tough with a hand drill (or small drill press). Not sure what your control arm assy. looks like, but if it can't be put in a lathe, it might be tough...

If I had a drill bit like that I'd be in good shape. The wishbone upper control arm assembly is kind of hard to work with. I'll put a picture of it below. You can see the backside of the center tube in the pic. The other side is what I need to drill/tap.

Do you think your guy can do it while I wait if I bring it to him? I assume he's somewhere around Greensboro?

Heck with it, I just found an online vendor that sells the 1 11/64" bit with a 1/2" shank. I should have it by Friday.

Thanks for the tip Mike. Now I'll have to return my current bit. I can't do anything with it anyway.

yea I bought my drillbit on ebay for about $15 shipped IIRC (NEW). Probably not the best bit in the world, but I figured for the use it would get (mostly aluminum) it would be perfectly fine.
How are you going to tap it? Have fun if you are planning to tap it by hand...
Tapping is the next challenge. Given how it's all assembled I don't have much choice but to tap it by hand. I'll take some pics and let everybody know how it goes.

Roxboro Machine and Welding. 336 599 3393. cell 339504 3614. Can do inhouse and portable work.

I could do it on the Bridgeport mill if you were around here. Use plenty of tap lube. Tapping shouldn't be that bad, getting the tap to start and stay straight is going to be the difficult part!
