I do plenty of canoe/kayak camping in SC. I noticed you are around Kings mtn. not far from the SC state line. One of my favorite river systems in the state is the Broad, from 99 island landing SW of Gaffney on I85 all the way down to Peak SC outside of Chapin. Very scenic river system. If you ever want to do some camping let me know or find me on OffroadSC.
A guy I work with starts on sandy run creek just outside of shelby and takes that down to the broad river. Says it takes him about 6 hours to get to the broad river, then takes the broad on into sc. It would be nice to get a group up and do something. I'll find out from him next week on the exacts of his trips.
Well let's do it! I'm always down to go spend some time on the water. Next to wheeling it's the best way to spend time. Since my rig is currently in a building stage, I have nothing but time. I can easily arrange a pick up point with transportation back to the launch area for up to 6 people or more if there's another vehicle at the pickup point. A few other Mid Carolina jeepers members will be willing to go, in fact we go on a lot of trips together. Just say the word!
I'm in the market for another canoe if anyone is aware of one for sale. Everything I find they're wanting a new price for something used. Looking for a 14', no fiberglass or metal. Btw, I have a 6hr float down the south fork of the catawba about a half mile from my house, great day trip.
Catawba river is another one of my favorites in the state. I haven't seen much above Langsford canal though. I'm familiar with the stretch between hwy 9 landing near Ft. Lawn down to basically the top end of Lake Wateree. If you were going for a really long run down the Catawba, Fishing creek landing on the lake would be the last place to take out. Highway 9 landing on the Catawba is a safe area to leave a vehicle parked overnight with a fairly large island a few miles upstream for camping.
I paddled the kids today for about 4 hours on the south fork. Fished some to. There were gar everywhere hitting the top of the water. I hooked one but 6 lb line wasn't enough. Fun fight I will say. I
Hope to be camping in two weeks where is still in the air at this moment.
Broad river in metcalf (shelby). Was highly recommended by a close friend of mine. Supposedly there's a huge rock ledge that be perfect to camp under and a good fishing hole nearby to boot. I can't recall the location exactly, I havent floated that portion of the river. Been floating the river in the upper part of the county latley, getting photos and the like to tey and help stop the damned reservoir that Cleveland county water is attempting to build.
