I've been tossing around the idea of buying one or the other. I would like to do some paddle trips but I'm undecided on what to buy. I really don't want to get into white water I'm wanting to do more of a touring thing and possibly some fishing. a canoe makes more sense but the kayak sounds like a lot of fun too. I need some opinions from people with experiences with both. whacha got?

Canoe.
You can bring more stuff. Bring a friend, and not a cramped.
X2, but I'm biased. I've only used kayaks in the ocean but they seem a bit more fun and manuverable. I have friends that use both, I guess if you're wanting someone to go along its an easy choice. Scott I've got a good 2,4 or 6hr trip right below my house if you ever wanna go. We've only made one attempt @ night, it didn't work out very good:lol:

canoe, especially for trips. if you ever do white water it will be more fun/challenging in a canoe. and ive always wondered where you put the beer cooler in a kayak?

NOT BETWEEN YOUR LEGS!!! almost lost a friend that way! kayak rolled and the cooler wedged him in.

if your by yourself, kayak. with a friend, canoe. I cant remember the name of the company, but its a plastic type canoe thats kinda best of both worlds. if i remember the name i will post up.

it was a white water canoe, dunno the brand.

I have an extra 16 footer, but it's already claimed. :huggy:
We're launching just below the canoe rental on hwy 16/88.........

canoe, I've got one that has a flat bottom which is more stable ( which I like because I got small kids ). I also can put up to a 5hp. motor on the back. I have a small trolling motor that I use.

canoe's are a ton of fun for river trips. you can pack way more "junk" that you don't necessarily need on a camping trip into a canoe and its fun to run rapids with a buddy. But for lakes or the ocean i would say a kayak. much more efficient and more fun to paddle i think.
some pics from my last two trips...

Native Watercraft Ultimate 14.5. Its a combo between a canoe and kayak..
Purchase the tandem one, then you can remove the 2nd seat, move the one to the center so you can use it solo too.

I am thinking VERY seriously of picking up one of these, it is a canoe with a square back so I can mount a small 5hp motor!

Loved my kayak, I had a 13' one that I could stuff all kinds of equipment in, but hated it on the lake (no rudder, was for whitewater) but got tired of all the traffic on Nantahala and my crappy skills / bouncing my helmet off the rocks upside down, etc.

So, canoe or scanoe for me...trying to get into fishing and mild whitewater here in the Triad.

I eventually had to get both. My wife and I take out two single Heritage 9.5 yaks on trips (they dont call tandem yaks 'divorce boats for nothing'. Fishing rivers I do with friends in a 147 Old Town. Get a canoe first, they are best suited for anything that you want to do on a river, but you need a bud to go with. Its a PITA to work a canoe by yourself on a river.

I just looked at a native like the one pictured above. Thats a nice boat. I'm still looking. I'm going to rent a canoe for the weekend and then rent some yaks for a weekend to see what I like best.

Where ya going paddling?

Good luck with it. Its really fun, the native is really nice, considering it has little pontoons on each side that adds to its stability. you can near bout stand to one side of it

Both can be great or a pain, depending on what you're running. Rough whitewater=kayak. If you're by yourself and have to portage something, have fun with the canoe.

And josh, the preferred vessel for a river run like that is an air mattress or innertube and a mesh bag for a cooler. :flipoff2: Next time you venture to morganton I'll show you the catawba in such style.

Hey monk, where you gonna paddle, i dont know anywhere round here with enough water to make it fun (river wise).

im in the same spot as you are canoe or kayak but i want it for duck hunting everyone that i have talked to say you can't go wrong with a canoe. there great for lakes, creeks, rivers, ocean all of that. they have space and there easy to drain. when we go to the beach every year we get some kayaks and mess around in the ocean with them and they always fill up with water and it is a pain to get is all out. a canoe really all you have to do is tip it over and all at once the water comes out. there eazy to clean and you don't have to worry about a snake or something like that hiding out in it. that is just my tens cents on it goodluck with your decision.
