hey guys, my axle tags are illegible and I need to know pretty soon if I have 3.07s or 3.73s. Heres what I know: Im running stock d30 front and d35 rear (duh), I have 31" mud tires on it now, 4.0l with 5speed manual. I can keep up pretty good on the highway in 5th, but up steeper hills I shift to 4th (like on hwy 52 N near Mt. Airy). I can squall the tires pretty effortlessly from a stop at about 3k rpms and drop the clutch. 4 wheel low is pretty dang slow. Im thinking 373s but what do I know? What is your best guess. if I give a dealer my vin can they check for me? thanks.

I'm guessing 3.73 as well... You can prolly find out throught dealer of something like carfax???

put the rear on jackstands, tranny in neutral, no parking brake. Go underneath, rotate the driveshaft by hand. You'll have to count how many driveshaft revoultions it takes to spin the tires exactly once. Mark a line on the inside edge, or have a buddy on the outside watch.
3 driveshaft turns is about 3.07, 3and a half-->3.55, 3 3/4-->3.73, about 4 is 4.10 and so on.

Or you could pop a difff cover and look for a marking on the ring gear. It should tell you the number of R&P teeth, you could count them to confirm and divide the # of ring teeth by the number of pinion teeth.

I dont think carfax tells you this info.

TJ's with 4.0, 5spd, and a D35 had 3.07's. If they had the D44 rear, they had 3.73's. Certainly worth verifying, but it's a pretty accepted standard. With a 2.5 and a 5spd they had 4.10's. I don't really know about the autos.

^^^^^ Dude, the first one didnt work. I got only 1 1/2 full DS rotations to one tire rotation

:bounce2:HaHa, nevermind, its open carrier.................so I spun the tire TWICE. I got a little over 3 rotations...307s :(

had this problem on my CJ. If you get under there with a wire brush and steel wool you can get all the crap out of the punched markings. bc of rust mine were still impossible to read so I rubbed white chalk over the area and they were really easy to see from there

What year? Did it have the 30" wheel and tire package with the Canyon wheels (5 spoke aluminum) or the Bullethole wheels? For some reason I think with some of the Sahara's they did have a D35 w/3.73. I had forgotten about that.
