Anybody on here transport cars for living or know anybody who does? IE: From or to auctions or car dealers. Looking for a change in careers. Any info on how you got into it or likes/dislikes would be appreciated.

I have thought about this as a backup plan incase i lost my job.

get you self a 3car goose neck trailer and a dually truck. and any licenses you need. they start showing up at car auctions you will find people needing transport

The best thing is to get in with a large dealership that needs cars taken to the auction and back so you get paid both ways. Even better if you can find a dealer near where you live.

Another thing to consider is the Classic Car transport market. We typically haul our customers cars with either of our rigs, but there are times we get too busy and/or cannot justify the down time. Typically our customers want their cars in a certain place and they will pay what it takes; only down side with hauling Classic/Vintage Cars is the need for higher insurance coverage and enclosed transport. my.02.

Thanks for the input guys.

I already have the truck and trailer, so maybe I'll have a leg up.

My Uncle primarily hauls RVs, but the company he works with also sets him up with car and boat transport as well. He started out taking a workshop, I think it was here:

www.rvtransport101.com

But I'm going to double check that with him. He said the class was well worth it, not only because of the information he got, but also because the guy had contacts to get him setup with a company.

He's basically a contractor, but he has a company who sets up his loads. The cool thing about the place that does his scheduling, is that they'll set him up with the cars, boats, etc, so he doesn't have to run empty as much. He'll pick up RVs in Indiana, then they'll work to find him work on the way back. Sometimes it takes him in big circle, but as long as he's hauling full, he's making money.

I've considered the same thing as an active retirement, at some point. Once the kids are out on their own, it's something I'll look into further. My Uncle's been doing it since the fall and he's liking it so far.

What if you have an accident? Do you have all your permits and paperwork? May we see your business license when you get it?...all jokes aside I checked into this a couple of years ago, the biggest hurdle I saw was insurance. It was going to cost a pile of $$$$ for decent coverage. Yes,check the Statesville auction you'll get all the info you need from the line of guys hauling stuff in and out of there.

Not sure how guys do it on the big scale. I know several local dealers that have some retired guys to drive cars to and from auctions. CYJKrawler did it for a while, I don't think it was his cup of tea

The insurance will be high, remember you have to cover your truck and trailer plus anything you haul. If you ever wreck a new car while hauling it the dealer will want the full price of the car even thow your insurance may only want to pay repair cost. I have seen some big rig car haulers lose it all over this so make sure what ever insurance you go with it pays for full replacement of what you are hauling and get it in writeing.

Thanks again guys.

I work in insurance now, so I'm fully aware of my liability obligations. The trailer will be covered under the trucks comp/collision policy. You all are right though about the cars being transported, insurance is going to be high.

I work in Iredell county so I'll swing by auction and get the low down early next week.

You may want some insurance on just the trailer. Some truck policys do not cover it if it comes unhooked.

Anybody else? Thx!

If you're looking to haul for a living, I suggest that you check out the Trucker's Report. It's a board much like this, except full of truckers
