So I bought a q-jet from jegs the other week got it put on but can't seem to get it tuned in right. It will start and run at a 1000 rpm's as long as I keep my foot on the gas. It also backfires, wont idle, and will catch the top of the carb on fire. Need some help adjusting it!

Did you do any timing work to the vehicle what you are describing sounds like a timing issue!

Nope no timing work just took the original q-jet off, put a holley on that was junk and then went back to a q-jet

Did you hook up all the vacuum lines? You engine have vac assist timing distributor?
Triple check the carb. It may have a vacuum port on it you missed.

Sounds like super lean or timing issues. Could be plug wires wrong place. Vacumn leak will make it run lean. All these things have been mentioned except maybe low fuel level in carb. I would pull plugs, do compression check and while plugs are out check timing with light. Makes sure plug wires are in correct place. Check for adequate spark. As said before look for vacumn leak. Before starting look down in carb, pull back linkage and see a good stream of gas from accelerator pump.

if it was running fine and you JUST changed the carb, then I am going to ignore timing, plug wires, dizzy installed wrong and a few others.

I would check for vacuume leaks and make sure you have alll vacuum lines connected.

If nothing obvious, let it idle and spray brake cleaner around the base of the carb...see if it cleans up. Last new carb I bought (ironically a Qjet from Jegs) had an out of square base plate and couldnt get it to seal....
