My dads bmw second inline cat is bad, he cant pass inspection unless he replaces it and BMW wants $700 for a new cat . . . . .

I've looked around online with little to no progress, anyone know of a place to buy the cats for a reasonable price or is that pretty much the only option?

Its the second of the three cats in the system thats bad, one of the two that are up close to the engine.

Thanks

grab your cordless sawzall and head to the nice side of town...

I have to assume the car has over 80,000 miles?

From the title of the thread i thought you were wanting to trade your BMW for a cat(like a meowing cat):flipoff2:

Are you only concerned about it passing emissions or do you want to fix it right with a new cat? There are ways to get it to pass with the problem you have now

if you have already spent $500 tryign to fix it, or can get a receipt from a shop saying that you have, you will get a sticker and have another year to fix it....

I got to thinking about this. You can only get all the cats from BMW. It's all in one unit from the exhaust manifold to just after the cats. (there's a seam in the OEM pipe there.) We didn't replace very many of those. We replaced a ton of the V8 cats though. So for $700 you get all four cats.

sorry..left early Friday to go wheeling, the place I get the cats from is in Cali. I'll call them around noon today and let ya know.

$450 for a weld in type....$550 for the bolt on type (both aftermarket but are made for specifically for this car). It uses manifold cats I'd just need to know if it was the one for the first 3 cylinders or the back 3 cylinders.

Sweet, probably will go for the bolt on type, is there any gaskets/bolts/etc I might need as well with the install?

I'm pretty sure its for the back three cylinders, my dad keeps refering to it as the second cat, I havnt actually seen it myself as im up in Raleigh, but I'll find out for sure.

Oh, the ones in the manifolds. Have fun with those!
