Cause for not starting first time....

Ever since I had my fuel cell installed I have had this problem of not getting the TJ to start first try. It always started first crank before installation. The rail is holding pressure and the pump primes as soon as the key is turned on, and it will usually start on the second turn everytime. I'm guessing that since the install of the cell it's only fired first time 5 times. Now, if it's recently been shut down (say 5 minutes) it will fire right back up. What's the deal?

I'm just wondering if I'm damaging any internals cause sometimes it'll backfire thru the intake. Like...crank,crank,crank...no start, poot out the intake.

What da deal yo!

YO,
Is the cell vented? You may be developing a vacuum after consuming fuel. Or, fuel drain back to the cell? Sounds like the pump can overcome the problem so I would ensure its got a small atmospheric vent and that the line is not draining back to the tank after it sits awhile (drain back valve).

This is the actual cell in my TJ. Do not pay attention to the fuel line connection as it was improperly connected at the time. I think it's in the middle or closest to rear of jeep connection now. Before, it was on the return...VERY BAD!!!
Are you suggesting venting off of one of the other connections? I know what you are talking about if so, just making sure.

if you run a vent off one of the others, you'll get the Check Engine light for an Evap leak...

mine fires right off, setup the same way as yours...

Thanks for the article Greg...I'm pretty sure mine had some serious damage done to it when it was improperly installed the first time. The backpressure created from connecting to the wrong port screwed the pump. Problem is: since I had all the trouble in the beginning with it leaking, shooting fuel out the engine bay, leaking even more I had to put a ton of that gas stop leak stuff on the external rings of the pump assembly. This my friend, is a complete pain in the ass to remove.

So, do I deal with the startup issues, or deal with the F'd up fuel cell I have after I remove all the sealant and pray that I can get the bolts & nuts back on?!

No win situation.

don't know...

mine still leaks a little around the rings...just enough to smell a little gas occasionally, but not enough to set off an EVAP leak code...

Greg

Mine could have gas running out of it like a waterfall and still no EVAP leak code would be thrown. I don't understand it?

Maybe one day I'll actually get around to taking it apart, again.

in the 50k ive put on the xj, mine has almost NEVER started on the first try, i just got used to it,

staton, next time im in town, i need to borrow that fuel pressure gauge, you still have that thing right?

iirc - factory setups have a drain back valve, you have the oem pump, im not sure if that part is in the pump or not, but its possible its bad..

fwiw: my old TJ always needed a long crank or 2 short cranks to start...
