I know alot of people on the trails have them. Any certain make or specs/features better than other ones. Just wondering? Antennas? I really dont want a 10ft tall whipper.

3 foot firestick should be fine. I use a heavy duty spring mount too.

Ebay I have found is your best bet for the actual CB. You can get a nice used Cobra 29 Classic for the price of a new Radio Shack CB. Just don't skimp on the wiring and antenna, and make sure to pick up an SWR meter if you don't know anyone near by (or any truck stops near by) to tune it with. Because a nice CB is worthless without a good antenna/setup.

Easiest way to set it up is with a magnet mount antenna. But a correctly mounted fiberglass antenna will get you a lot better reception in most cases (Mounted on the bumper/tire carrier/roof/etc).

Im going with Draider on this. If you google how to tune a cb it comes up with tons of info also try how to set up.. My eyes hurt for days at all the info i read. basicly its all the same honestly so if you find a good site just use it. You prolly wont need a peak n tune or anything special thats just far better range. on the trail all you really need is about what you can normaly get out of a "stock" cb

All CB's are equal in transmitting By law they can't be sold pushing more then 4watts of power. A $400 CB will not transmit any farther then a $50 CB if there using the same antenna setup in theory. That being said the better CB's have more options that make listening nicer and usually have weather bands and all the cool stuff. But if your wanting lots of range on any CB its all in the Antenna as mentioned before. You can save money on a CB but don't skimp on the antenna or the installation of the antenna

cobra 25 or 29, uniden pc68 xl or '' '' elite.... Wilson antenna or k30-k40 with swr meter would be a very good setup... I have ran all these and the best one for me is the uniden pc68 elite with k30 and swr meter... I range up to 15 miles on stock radio with around 1 on the swr meter on 1, 15, and channel 40... (PERFECT) Your looking at about $160 for the setup i have and thats everything brand new.

cobra 25 for me, using rg11 coax and a 10' trimmed steel whip.

Exactly.

Antenna needs to be "tunable" - some cheap ones are difficult to tune.

Length is better but spring mounts can be used to get away with a shorter antenna - though range will still suffer a bit.

I personally own an SWR meter but I wouldn't recommend buying one unless you absolutely can't find anyone to borrow it from. I couldn't so I bought but with that said I'd happily loan it to anyone local to save them the money as I feel it isn't something you'd ever need to use again unless you change your radio/antenna.

Saw a whip antenna do just that once on the trail. Was tied down to begin with, but later come loose/ whiped a guy across the face. He wasn't happy as the blood poured.

Cobra LTD 25 classic is what i used to have. Got the job done.

But the important part is getting your attenna tuned. If you want long distance talk you can get a long distance amplifier for it too but they don't come cheap.

They work great on trails especially if you're havin problems or someone else is.
