I've been messing with a few old bikes here lately and now I've got one that I'm really exicted about building.
1972 Honda CB500
It has been parked for a few years and looks pretty rough. I'm going to have the carbs rebuilt and simple things like new cables/brake work/tires
I'm hoping to have that much done in the next two weeks.
Then I will order the hard tail kit/seat/fender/bars and such
I picked up a HD Sportster tank for it a few days ago.

Ive got to work within a thousand dollar budget. So far I've still got $950:driver:

The bike on the left is the one that I'm building. It's a CB500 and the one on the rights is my parts bike. It is a 73 CB550 with a big bore kit...so it's actually a 750
I'm going to use the pipes off the parts bike. I'm also gonna snake the new front tire from the gl1100 that I have in the basement.

Once I get the carbs on, new throttle cable, and battery, it should run.

Shit yeah, we'll be able to cruise around to all of the hudson/granite falls bars in no time!
There just might be some bars here by the time I get it finished:flipoff2:

Ive got 3 sets of carbs soaking in a diesel/gas/PB Blaster bath..... Noone light a match under my carport

I've got the bike stripped down now. I ordered the hardtail kit, new grips/throttle/cable, ignition switch, and drag bars.
Hopefully this weekend I'll get a new seat, rear fender, tires, spark plugs.
The wiring looked like hammered hell so I'm going to build my own harness. I'm gonna making a fake oil tank (electrical box) on the cnc if I can catch my friends dad at work.
Also going to do the carbs myself.
I'm really pumped about this bike. He is close to the look I'm shooting for.

Keep the build coming. Ive been wanting to build one myself but just cant find a bike cheap enough. Ill definatly keep up with this build.

damn, ive been dreaming about picking up an thrashed old Honda or Yamaha and doing the same thing. So if im going to live vicariously through you I need more pictures!!

That's cool man that's what I've been wanting to do to my bike I was going to make my own hardtail though, mine is also only a 82 honda cm 400 but it was dirt cheap going to be watching this thread for sure

What happened to Swampy, I noticed its not in your sig anymore?

I've been having a hell of a time finding some random peices I need for my carbs so I haven't been motivated to work on the bike.....It looks a little different now

The tank is going to be sitting about 3"s lower after I redo that section of frame.

Hopefully I will have it wired and the carbs rebuilt and on by the end of next week. I'm gonna hold off welding on the hard tail kit until I get it running.

Progress is slow and good parts are hard to find. I didn't see having this thing done in time for warm weather.....and I found a good deal on a bike that was ready to ride.

This thing is really fun to ride. It's in really good condition for a 78 and everything works. :)

I haven't really made any progress because I've been working pretty long hours....He is the 72 and the 78 beside it is a good example of what it looked like decades ago.

I'm ordering more parts this weekend and welding in the hard tail kit on saturday

what random parts are you looking for? There are several sites that I frequent and some people that might be close to you that just might have what you need.

Would love either a CB750 or 500 to cafe it. Love the looks of a well done cafe racer, but I'm a moron with tools and know I could never get it done right lol

I'd like to have a good set of cb500 carbs, a set of good coils, and a 16" HD rim. I'm going to have my rear wheel laced with a Harley 16" because tire choices. I'm gonna go with the Avon speed master for my front 19" wheel but not sure of what rear tire yet

I'll check my shop to see what I have. I sold my CB750 a few months ago and gave the guy most of what I could find (3 extra 16" Drop center HD wheels, 16 x 5 HD wheel and hub w/ Avon Speedmaster tire on it) I might have a set of coils. Did you check hondachopper.com? These guys are strictly CB750s and will not help you if you bring up a CB500 but the coils should be the same and someone might have a set for cheap if I cant find some. Check the links page on the homepage and see if that might help you some. There's a following for these bikes as well as the 750s, just have to find it.

I've been on hondachoppers.com that where I got my wiring info. If I keep working this much overtime then I'm just kinda find a cheap running 750 to use my parts on.

Update
