Like everybody else, I have been frustrated with the $75 and $100 cutoffs at the gas stations when you swipe a CC outside. Found this on another forum, and it helps 'splain it:
I recently found out a coworker owns a local gas station (her DH manages it).
I asked about the pump $50, $75, or $100 cutoff on credit cards. She told me that the station can set any limit they want BUT Visa and Mastercard will only cover the first $75 on a stolen card for cards swiped at the pump. If the card is run inside, there is no limit. If a station has too much bad card activity, Visa or Mastercard may cut that limit down to $50.
So the stations that limit the pumps at $100 are taking a $25 risk on each transaction. Stations that are capping at $50 have to much of a charge back rate and have had Visa and / or Mastercard lower their limit.
With that explanation, I can see how some station owners are pointing their fingers back at Visa and Mastercard for the limits, even though they have the choice on where to set the limit.
