just had two quotes on 4' chainlink fence in the backyard. one from a small fence company of $5-6k and one from lowes was 11K to fence in a little under an acre.

my question is can i do it myself and at what cost?

never done any fencing before. any tips or just let a pro do it.?

all im wanting is 4' chainlink no top rail. one drive thru gate and one walk in gate. hits on each side of the house. lemme know if more info is needed. not sure how much footage dont have quotes.

it can be a pain in the ass. unless you can find it already made in chunks. Cuz you have to wire all the posts to the fence. I'd shop around a lil more, but 5k isnt that bad of a price.

you need to make sure you "stretch" it properly so it stays straight and doesn't have too much extra between the posts. The parts are quite pricey and the labor is not much. My neighbor had one put up, 5', black coated, around their back yard, about 400 linear feet. In less than 2 days it was up with 3 professionals installing it. So, there isn't much $$$ in the labor. If you want to save on the labor, maybe install the posts (set in concrete) and pay someone to install the fence. I think I'd opt for the top rail. if not, your yard will look like a construction site...

I have always installed my own because I could never afford to have it installed. Usually the big box stores have install instructions, cement corner and gate post, drive the runners in. If your grade is fairly level, you would be surprised how easy it is once you get going.

It is not difficult at all. My wife and I did ours (with some help from good friend mixing the concrete) in three days and the better part of one was waiting for the crete to set up. Just make sure your posts are straight and set well into the ground. Do not get greedy on the concrete. If you have more than 5-10 posts rent the power hole auger and drill all your holes first then return the auger. I used the standard strecher and my truck bumper as an anchor. Used a ratchet strap to apply tension. Pull it tight and install the clamps to hold the ends. I suggest the top rail as well. You can come back later and twist all the ties in place. I also made my own gate because the cheapest I could find was like $400 for an 8 foot opening. I made my gates 8 foot each tomake it easier to back the trailer through. I cut them a little tall but I will trim them down later. I think we had roughly 200-300 foot.

Not sure if you're interested but I just put up a 4' split rail (Locust posts/rails) and the kennel wire on the back to keep in my beasts... I fenced in .25acre and had about $1700 total into it (besides my time, so probably about the same price as chain if you DIY)... I rented a hydraulic auger, and also set each post w/ concrete... I did it myself b/c I wanted it done right and didnt want to pay someone $11/LF to do it. I did it for approx. $5.50/LF...

I've just never liked chain link fencing...

You can do it yourself. It takes time and patience, but not too hard. Often you can get it free if you are willing to take it down from someone elses yard. You will still have to get new poles, but post wanted adds on all the local boards and craigslist.
