Check engine light

 The check engine light came on today. Being pretty illiterate about engines except for the simple stuff, I took it to Auto Zone for a reading by the OBII scanner. It came back with a reading of "Evaporative system leak--Small" and "Evaporative system leak--large". Any Ideas? I don't know what to check, but I do remember having the same problem when I first bought the Jeep several years ago. I took it to the dealership and they fixed it. I don't remember what they said the problem was though.

Before I take it to the dealership and pay them all sorts of money, does anybody have any ideas of what I should check? It's an '01 TJ 4.0 liter.

Thanks for any help.

EVAP system codes are usually one of two things:

1. gas cap
2. hose near the EVAP cannister is bad

if you leave the gas cap off, or don't tighten it, you can trip a code...

if one of the hoses going to the EVAP cannister (located right in front of the brake master cylinder in the engine bay...in case you didn't know) might be cracked...just give them a good once over...

is your gas cap tight? a loose cap can cause a the check engine light to come on. at least that is what i have herd

Gas cap is a common problem with most CEL's. Saw it many, many times at BMW. People filling up with the engine running, or not putting it back on or just sticking the cap in the neck and not actually turning it at all. Try to tighten it first so you'll know if it was loose. If it wasn't, then move on to the lines. Light should go off after a few starts without the problem present. least thats how BMW did it.

the things to check is
1. the gas cap
2. all connections to the evap canister
3. all vent tubes under vehicle
if you go wheeling with the vehicle it is a good possibilty you could havre knocked 1 of the vent lines off or broke it

No more callers please, we have a winner. It was the gas cap. A buddy of mine decided that he wanted to take it off the other day when I was pulling out of a parking space. The light didn't come on until the next day, and I completely forgot about the gas cap. After checking all the hoses twice, I remembered the gas cap from the other day, went to Auto Zone, had the error deleted, and I've had no problems since.

Thanks everyone for their input and help.
