got any obvious ideas on a 2000 XJ sport of why the engine light would come on?

if its the check engine light, and not the "service engine soon" light, then take it up to an Advance Auto and they should be able to read off the code and discription of the problem to you for free....

You need to check the engine!

then again if they tell you it's one thing, that's not always the case. remember they're not mechanics.
