Check this 5.0 in a VW buggy on CL.

I have a baja. Unless you got the rear set up tight, you're only spinning one wheel. If the rear is too tight, you can't steer. I've hung pillowcases with sand on the back of mine just to see what it would do with Baja Claws on back and it did do better than my 2wd F100 with posi.

But still cool no doubt! BLINGY...

why is that?

Seems like I have seen a video on youtube where a VW couldnt turn at all with a locked diff.

I have had welded diffs in too many vehicles to count, and very little issues with steering.

Whats so different other than the rear engine? Or is that it?

The engine in the photos is too powerful for the dune buggy, a new 4 cylinder has been ordered.
It is a 1987 5.0L roller with aprox 87,000 miles with no known issues except too much power for car.
Such a thing exist????

All the weight in rear, none over the front to push the tires down and help give them any bite to steer with.

When I was stationed in Germany for the Army, we used to make adapter plates and flywheels to put Fiat, Ford, BMW, Alfa-Romeo, Audi, etc engines on Beetles that we stock car raced. Great power, but pushed like a dump truck. I read an article in the back of the current issue of DirtSports magazine about a man in the late 60's who manufactured adapters to put sbc v8's, v6's on VW based buggies. KEP was the name of the company.

the reason i ask is bc my dad has basically given me a carmen ghia, on the condition i build a dragcar out of it, for some work i did on all his other vw's......dont need to steer..hehe bbc sittin out back
