I've got a used 9" rear axle that I need to check the gear ratio of. I was told it was 4.56, but is there any way to know without removing the center section? I thought I could get an idea of the ratio by turning the wheels 4 times and counting the times the pinion shaft rotated. I ended up getting almost 18 turns. Does anyone know an exact way to tell the ratio without opening it up?

pull the pinion carrier out (5 bolts), count the teeth on the pinion, then mark one tooth on the ring and count as you turn. much easier than pulling the whole chunk

unless there is a tag on it, then it's a matter of decoding the tag.

Cant you also turn the axles and see how many times the pinion yolk turns?

That's what I said I did, so I started messing with the numbers and found out that since I got 18 turns on the pinion flange and 4 by turning the axles, I could divide 18 by 4 and get 4.50. That's close enough to 4.56 to make me happy.
