cherokee trans case

going to buy 90 cherokee with a242tc can i drive it without rear driveshaft? without all the fluid coming out of the back of the case. part two, i cannot drive a tj with the 231tc because of this correct?

The TJ shouls be able to be driven without a rear shaft. I have no idea about a 242 though
