for you cherokee guys? how do you tell a 4.0 from a 4.0 h.o. and a 87 4.0 from a 94 4.0? if you can help me it would be great guy thanks.

4.0 ho came between 91 and 94 I believe. Throttle body has 4 bolts holding it on if it is a HO motor or newer. The pre-91 motors were a renix flavor and had 3 bolts on the throttle body, other than that they are pretty similar looking from the outside. I think the older renix motors also had a funky heat shield kinda thing between the intake manifold and the exhaust manifold.

pretty sure all 4.0's after 91 were 4.0....or it just may be that ive never seen a regular 4.0 after 91. the HO came in 92 and pretty sure there were no older ones made, since its a differnt system.

the HO's sport HO badges on the bottom left of the hatch. as for spoting it on just the block or with the motor out of the suv..........its gonna be hard

1991 was the first year of the HO. 1990 was the last year of the renix engine. The computer and washer bottles are moved around compared to a 1991 or later

Probably more information that you wanted.

Any time I need stock specs on my Cherokee I check out this JeepForum thread.

Any time I'm about to start a project I check out this thread.

I'm pretty sure the Renix XJ (87-90) had a knock sensor so look for that.

The later HO motors around 00-01 have a head thas does not flow as good as the earlyer HO heads.
