Chevy Tahoe rear third

Friend wanted me to help do some maintenance on his Tahoe. Pulled the cover off the rear and found this. Anybody can tell me what this is in the carrier? Not familiar with it at all.

Yup def the famous gm gov lock. Def not known for strength, litterally a ticking time bomb.
