Picked up a cj yesterday.

Cj has a 360 in it. new carb, new fuel cell and lines. Jeep idles great...no hickups or etc. As soon as you go to give it gas it kills itself. Any idea where to start looking. Ill be jumping on this and trouble shooting tomorrow but thought id hear some advise before i go to looking.

Timing?..Getting to much fuel? not enough?

Seems since it idles great that the fuel is not an issue..

Completly stalls or backfires back thru the carb?

accelerator pump setting? To rich/lean?

WHICH "new" carb?
MC2100?
Stock 4bbl?
Holley or other crap?

Is it getting a shot from the accelerator pump?

Wrong assumption! The idle circuit is separate from the "run" circuits, usually just sharing fuel from the bowl. I've seen both extremes... idles great & craps off idle (clogged jet) and idles bad/barely & runs fine over 1000rpm (clogged idle tubes/trees).

Since you have good idle, what do the jets look like? Dirty fuel or "bits" (chips, etc. from the fuel cell or lines) can easily clog them...

so this may be stupid idea but I have a cj with a 304 and it does the same thing if you don't let it warm up for like 4 minutes. after that it runs fine but if you start it right up and give it gas it dies.

Sorry for the late reply...ive been having Enet problems..

Today went throught the carb, Changed the float settings a lil and other misc... everything seemed fine..jets,accelerator pump and etc..put it back together.

checked all the Vac lines and there fine.

Checked the firing order and its fine.

checked the fuel pump and etc fuel stuff and its good.

SOOO..Carb is good, fuel is good, distrib is good...Only thing i can guess thats wrong is the cam jumped timing. Pulled everything off the front of the motor and will check it out tomorrow.
