CJ Steering Column SHAFT in a YJ Steering Column?

I know I can use a YJ steering column and shaft in my CJ. The upper part of the intermediate shaft requires modification / change for it to connect though.

Here's my flavor of the question... I'm thinking about using the YJ steerlng column exterior with the CJ column interior parts (shaft, bearings, etc). If this works, I would avoid the joint issue at the column shaft-intermediate shaft junction and replace the broken column parts in my existing setup (see next statements).

My outer column is unusable at this point (frozen ignition switch, broken plastic housing, missing key lock tab). It's a mess...
