Have you checked all steering components from the steering wheel to the knuckles?

Check every joint for play. a little here and a little there, adds up.

there is some adjustment you can do to the box, but it can be tricky and easily screwed up.

Start by checking all steering components.

I'm not sure how the pre-76 CJs mounted the steering box, so this may not apply to you. Over the 12yrs that I've owned my CJ, I've replaced about every steering component. By far the best improvement was the cross frame steering box brace. A few years after I installed it, I had it off for some reason (it mounts under shackle moints), and took it for a spin around the neighborhood. The frame/box flex was very noticeable. After I put it back on, the stiffness was back and it steered like a dream.
Of course, you need to have good tie rod ends and a tight steering box first :driver:
