CJ won't Start...Help

I picked up a 83 CJ7. Motor turns but will not fire. This is what's new. spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor button, solenoid, and battery. When its trying to crank it turns to the point where it wants to start but won't. Feels like when its trying to turn over, that it not turning fast enough to catch and crank. It just boggs down.

Any ideas on this one? New to the jeep world so anything is appreciated.

Thanks

three things needed to fire an engine

Fuel
Air
Fire

Air is pretty much a given unless you're in a vacuum of space, or the Intake is sealed shut.

Fire: new parts listed above are good for that, but make sure all your wires between Distributor, Ignition Module, and coil have good connections. Go ahead and get a spare Ignition Module (they go bad easy and you'll want a spare).

Fuel, are you getting fuel? have you gotten too much fuel and flooded the engine? let it sit for a while. remove air cleaner, look down carb and pull the throttle. You should get a squirt of fuel. If not, this might be your issue.

Try that and let us know what's happening.

Also, can't tell from your description, but is your engine turning over fast or slow? if slow, a low battery or bad ground may be suspect.

or a weak starter motor if all else fails pull it & have it tested

Start with the basics like mbalbritton suggested.

Gas? I pour a little gas in the carb or use starting fluid

Spark from the plugs? pull and see if it jumps a spark to the manifold using an old spark plug or screwdriver when you try to start it

Spark from the coil? pull high tension wire that goes from the coil to the top of the distributor and see if a spark jumps to a ground when you try to start it

make sure you are trying to start with a good battery (should turn over and spin fast)

I wouldn't mess with timing or the starter (or replace anymore stuff) until I verified those things.

New to you.....did it run when you bought it, and now it won't, or did you buy a non-runner?

Did it run before you replaced any of this, and now it won't, or did you replace the stuff hoping to get it to run?

I am going to repeat some of these guys but first thing first.
Verify fuel and spark. Don't assume you have it.....Don't spend money on stuff till you know because you could buy alot of stuff before the problem gets solved and you might have only needed the last thing you bought......
