Well I want a trail rig/DD that I can bang around and my current CJ7 is not it. So I've been putting together odd and end stuff for a few months and will be bolting, cutting & welding it together to see what I can turn it into. So here is what I have so far.
Mods move this where it needs to be I'm not sure its a build just yet. I've been mostly cutting stuff up this morning and taking off parts that I want need. I have alot of tub work in the cj and I may just take it off the frame so I can put it on its side to work on. I'm going SOA for sure. Which means more cutting. Well back to work.
Another cage pic
Pic of the cj7 when I first got it home.
I got a little cutting done.
The back section is pretty bad.
I've got alot of work to do. I had to add a little brace so the backend would fall apart.
Anybody have any cj7 body parts for sale?
Well the cage wouldnt fit in the tub without some trim work.
I trimmed all the tubbing back where it shouldn't hit the body anywhere.
I left about 2" of tubbing so I could go back and connect to it later when I tie it into the frame.
Well I'm done cutting for now. I'll be pressure washing what I can get to in the morning. I have most of my sheet metal bent I just have to weld it together. It's Time for a few
Started adding new sheet metal
Punched some cover plates for the body mounts and put in some poly bushing I traded for.
I used 13 gauge metal for all the parts I replaced.
I got the inner fenders and rear floor section in
I set the cage in place. Looks like I need to lowwer the front down a inch or so But I'm done for today is 30.
Ok I paused my project for several months and even sold some of it. I had a tough year with my sisters passing and just couldn't put any time towards anything. But I have spent the last 3 weekends working on the cj here is where I have gotten.
I started with a 1982 cj7 frame that has had a shackle reverse already done on the front.
I found some 3" lift springs from a wrangler.
Stock cj axles from a 1979 cj5(3.56 gears).
3/8 flat bar for shackles.
These are 2" longer than stock.
And I bolted it all together and got a rollin chassis.
The frame had some rust around the body mount holes and the rear section of the frame. I punched some 1 1/2" holes in some .080 material and sheared it down to 2.375X2.375 and welded in place here is one of them.
This is the repair on the rear frame section luckly the PO had bought the replacement parts and all I had to do was put in place.
Stripped the tub and finished welding in some patch panels.
Put the rear sections in place.
I guess I replaced about half the tub inner section. I pressure washed the whole thing and cut all the extra stuff off.
Primmed and under coated the tub.
I set the cage in and ordered the tubing to finish the cage. I did run across a 304 and a t18 4 speed. Thats going to be the power plant. I used the rear drive shaft from a cj7 on the front and the front drive shaft from a 1977 f150 in the rear.
Still setting on 15x10 wheels with some 33" rollers.
Well thats how far I have gotten and hope to work on it some this week and again saturday. Well its time for a cold or2
The only thing I would have done different would have been take better dimension notes or took some pics with a readable scale in it. Of course I did have another jeep in the drive way to go by
sheet metal work looks great, do you think once you get some weight (gas, spare ect) that rear shackle angle will improve? you might have to move that hanger
I hoping it will, but the springs are pretty arched. I've seen that with new springs and they settle in. I'm more concerned about the front being taller than the rear. With the shackle reverse and the shackles I made its probably 2 inches taller than the rear with the motor sitting in place.
