Arite, I have an 84 CJ7 2.5L with a t4. Anyone know if a t5 would be a bad idea? As far as road/off road performance, speed or compatibility, anyone have experience in this? I was just wondering if the extra gear would make that much of a difference...and if I go with the swap, would everything bolt up? Or would I need adapters or what not. Anyways, thanks for the help.

As far as I know A jeep T-4 and a Jeep T-5 are the same except for the overdrive 5th gear. Direct bolt up. With the 2.5. unless you have deep gears,or small tires, I doubt you would be able to use the 5th gear very much on the hwy. And it would be of no use off road.

I did the same swap in mine years back before I knew any better. T4 and T5 suck! Prolly OK with small tires like Chip said but you will wear it out quick with anything larger. Just go ahead and put in a t-18!

Ok so I'm gonna scrap the t4 and t5 concept for now. I've been having trouble with my t4 so I'm thinking about looking into a different transmission. T18 or T176 or somthing. I drive my jeep alot to work and whatnot, but I also play....so anyone know what would be the best choice for my use...and also how much work to pair up with a 2.5(bell housing, mounts and all that good stuff)

SM465. You modify your stock bellhousing and reuse your stock driveshafts. You will need a front bearing retainer and a t-case adapter. Check novak-adapt.com for lots of good info.

Although 3 usable street gears may not be enough for a 4 cyl.

IIRC Fourth gear in the T-4 and 4th(if you count the granny low gear) in the 465 are the same. 1.0:1

SM465 is huge and heavy in a CJ I would go with the SM420 the came with a 7.4:1 granny and are very strong save the SM456 for a Full size jeep... LOL

I personally have the SM420 in my CJ-5. Strength and weight are about the same as the 465. But because of the length of the 465 it makes a good replacement for the t-4 or t-5. Just buy the adapter, put it in, hook your stock driveshafts back up, and go.
