Replacing my windshield.
Got one from a junkyard (they pulled it).
I've managed to get 95% of the old butyl rubber off, using a utility knife. Basically now it just has little bits of black color around the rim, you can barely feel it (liek 1/32nd thick).

1 - is there any trick to getting this crap all the way off? Scrub w/ brillo?
2 - does it really matter? If the remnants are really stuck on there, will it change the adherence of the new goop?

I'm having an actual "pro" do the install.

FWIW, in the end I think that going this route is not worth it. After the PITA of hunting down a windshield in a pick 'n pull, then paying $64 for them to pull it, then having to clean it up real good... should have just paid a little more for Safe-Lite to do it all.

A bare razor blade and some laquer thinner will normally get it. Helps if the goop is warm too. All in all a "discount" glass service job is well worth it compared to doing it the hard way.

It really won't matter with that much left. The new goop will be thicker than that.

Should have gotten a lexan windshield from a race shop and cut it down to size, thats what I did for my tacoma. Worked great and you don't have to worry about breaking it again :D I just bought one the other day for practically nothing (less than $20), they have another, but I'd say it would be too far of a drive for you.

fyi if thats a glue in winshield you must leave the stuff on at a min thickness or you might not get a good bond with the new stuff. this is what i have been told and seen multiple times over the years. so all that clean up work you did was a big waste of time.

Leave it on there. It's only worth doing if you do it yourself. Piano wire to remove it and autozone sell the stuff to put it in. Really -- It's easy to install. I've done several.

I did think about this, but I figured that in order to get the bend so that it matches the frame that's be really pricy.
Besides there is that whole "wipers+lexan don't mix" problem, and since thsi still gets driven onte hroad alot, I'm not eager to give up my wipers.

Bending the lexan is no problem at all, the ones I get from race shops already are bent for a race truck or car, but they can be formed to fit a normal vehicle. Only deal is I had to pop-rivet it to my truck (and used the windshiel sealant). Couldn't get it to stay in place w/o rivets.

I had bought the Mar-Guard stuff for my Tacoma windshield, muddy windshield and wipers many times never scratched it, that stuff was amazing. Not sure if the stuff NASCAR uses is Mar-Guard or not. I have a tear-off I might put on it just in case.
