I need to clean off the outside of a toyota transmission I am putting in my 4runner. Any suggestions? I've tried the hose and engine degreaser on the bell housing but it doesn't seem to touch the grime. Is there an easy cheap way to do this or do I just need to spend a bunch of quality time with a small wire brush?

thanks

Degeaser and pressure washer. Or lots of brake clean and a small brush. I've done both ways.

Pressure washer is your best bet, but the only way Ive found that really works is to use hot water. That softens the crap and allows the water to push it off. If you use hot water through a pressure washer, and then spray with engine degreaser or purple power, or some type of strong cleaner like those, let it soak, then spray with hot water again, you will get what you want. It may take 2 or 3 cycles, but you will see a difference each time.

I cleaned a tranny and t-case this way a few weeks ago, heres what I got with basically no scrubbing (before and after):

steam cleaner if available or muriatic acid.

steam genny...don't get in the line of fire

ahhh yes the late night trip to the car wash with some oven cleaner..... I usually have my stuff already pre-soaked with cleaner for 10-15 min.. Then when you get there you can slide it off onto the grate (having a friend will help with heavy stuff) then pull out of the way some... Then hit it.... Have fun...

Late night???? Hey baby this is TN.We go mid afternoon so we can see if we got it all.:smokin:

We used to do that with motors. But we had an old wrecker that worked perfect.
Just hook the motor up to the boom and straight down main street to the car wash....

You DO realize if seen there are HUGE federal implications regardless of state, right?

I guess it would depend of who saw ya.I have talked to the car wash owner while I was do it before. As long as you use the outside bay he's cool with it.

So would the same apply if i were doing this in my front yard?

Oh yeah,The EPA would come and you'd be subject to a body cavity search and lifetime imprisonment.:D
