Yesterday after going to URE I pull into the parking lot and I hear a clunking noise coming from around the transfer case. The faster I go, the faster the noise gets. If I go under 3 mph I do not hear it. I checked the drive shaft bolts, and a quick glance under the Jeep but I have no idea where to start. Any help?

99 wrangler 3.5 lift, 5 sped. 4.0, np231,

If you think it is not the transfer case then the rest of my set up (in brief) is as follows

chrome ally axles (30) Aussie locker up front, rear 8.8 lock rite .

Note, I found a leak on the steering box, so I got to replace that. i doubt that is what is making the noise

is it sye? Ck the cv joint for play.

i had the exact thing happen to my 94 wrangler np231, and i didnt want to drive the jeep anymore till i got the noise figured out so i dont do damage to something else... came out to be the t-case had a bad bearing in it, happend due to me not having any fluid in the case, which leaked out from the rear yoke seal.

also check the crossmember and make sure it is tight

OLDER GMs were notorious for there bolt in crossmembers getting loose nd clunking

And if you have a bellyup skid, (I think you do?) Mine seems to loosen on occasion.
REALLY annoying.
I've tried lock tight, etc, no help.
When it gets loose I get a clunk as I accelerate or decelerate.

Centering Ball on the front driveshaft.
Get it rebuilt at a local driveshaft place should set you back about 125.00 to 175.00 ish.
