I have recently purchased a CJ 7 1981 with a 258 inline 6. It will soon need a clutch how hard is this to install and how long would it normaly take to change. The Jeep is fairly clean underneath so it does not have alot of build-up.

Are you pulling the motor or droping the tranny/t-case?

I have whatever tools I need my neighbor has a shop he has told me I could use. If I had knowledge of the process I proably would not be asking how long it would take. I do not know whether to pull the motor or the trans. that is why I was asking for some direction. I'm feel like I can take it apart and put it back together. I was just looking for some direction and a ideal as to what I was getting into.

I took off my front clip and pulled the motor to do mine. I went ahead and did my main seal and oil pan gasket while I was at it. Kind of a pain to set the motor back in, but not a bad project with 2 people. Could be done in a day tops with tools and parts ready to go back in. Just my 2 cents.

Good recommendations so far. I've done the tranny/x-case way. A big job for one person; two is better. A tranny jack is a must.

Done this dozens of times... Put the Jeep up on 4 good solid "concrete blocks" (not cinder blocks). If you don't have some, get some, you will use them again someday. Remove the floorpan cover panel, place a 2X4 across the top of the windshield frame (it will support it) and roll bar, attach a come-a-long to the 2X4, and hook to the top of the trans & as far back as you can get on transfer case. Using eyeball & common sense, try to hook so the unit will stay as level as possible. Take it out that way, and put it back in that way. My wife usually helps me with alignment when putting the thing back in, but I have also done it by myself. It's not that hard to do. The worst of it is removing driveshafts, crossmembers, etc. Good Luck! :)
