So I have some 18" FOA coilovers on the back of my rig and this weekend I was doing some wheeling when I noticed one started leaking oil out of the bottom cap on shock body. Well i just figured the cap screwed back in so I tried getting some pliers and tightening back up but it just kept turning, I tried on the other shock, it turned a few times and tightened up. So i dont know if its stripped out or what. I dont really know anything about them and if I do take the shock off and tear apart I dont know anything about servicing them. Anyone have any pointers? I would love to get it going by this weekend for the uwharrie jamboree but who knows!

I'm sure Alex does have some tips on making them less shitty, FOA's are pretty notorious for leaking. Unless you have a different generation shock, that should only be the dust wiper that is threaded. The actual seal should be under that held in with a snap ring.

ok,well Im gonna be pulling it off my rig tomm and try to see what i can figure it out......had to get my deuce tranny tonight :)

Welcome to the world of FOA's.
Okay....so the cap that you see is a wiper, it simply keeps dust out and not fluid in. The bearing and seal carrier is the one that keeps the fluid in and does all of the sealing. It has a O ring on the outter diameter and generally two seals with a O ring on the inside where the shaft slides.

This is a bearing and seal carrier for a King 2.5. Inside you can see a white seal, a clear/yellowish o-ring and the black part is the bearing. This is what keeps the shaft centered and sealed. Underneath my index finger is the groove where the O-ring sits. Your problem probably is somewhere in there and not in the seal cap. Also note the external threads on this piece. That's what your seal cap that you were grabbing with pliers screws on to. The threads probably aren't stripped, you're probably just spinning the bearing/seal carrier in the body. I did a write on up on Fox shocks on a Teryx forum. It will should you how to tear down and assembly one of these guys no problem but the allen key size and shaft nut is probably a different size. If you don't want to do it I charge $40 a shock to go in and rebuild it. If you're going to the Jamboree this weekend I can meet you and do it there if you can get parts in time.
Also you do not have to replace the shock oil unless you're a racer and you've ran a ton of heat in it and I'm 99% sure that's not the case here so don't worry about the oil.

Hope this helps
Alex
