When we went to Cape Lookout in November 2005, we saw all kinds of trucks/campers that people use for driving and camping on the beach. Everything from normal 4x4s to crazy RVs, bread trucks, and buses, all with big tires, some with back porches.

Heres an index of all the pics (sorry that there aren't thumbnails):

Of course this was my favorite pic:

And I like this one - is that a horse trailer? :)

those are definitaly some purpose built rigs. were the busses 4wd?

The majority of RVs and the buses we saw were NOT 4WD, just had big, wide tires on front and rear. I think since their tires don't have much tread on them, they won't dig in, and as long as they are wide enough that they don't sink in, even on a heavy rig like that, you're OK.

A few of the bread trucks were 4WD.

There was a SWEET 1960's Dodge Power Wagon out there with a slide in camper, on like 35s, but I didn't have the camera with me when I saw it.

Folks can pay to leave these rigs parked on the island (a lot of my pics are from the parking lot). The vehicle ferry service from Davis, NC is just two small boats (well, small compared to the NCDOT ferrys at Ocracoke), one holds two normal pickups, and the other holds 4. I guess the 4 vehicle ferry could hold one bus? It would definitely not be cheap to keep ferrying your rig (especially a big one) over there if you went all the time.

Here is what we hope to be taking out there this fall (huge pics, sorry)

I love that island. I used to live down there, and I'm hoping to go camping there soon. If anyone does know the price on the vehicle ferry that would be helpful. I was actually one of the lucky ones that got to go up the lighthouse twice.

Just came back from down there 2 weeks ago. Came back and immediatly got THIS as a result

We stayed in number 6, and they painted it the second day we got there :shaking:

Did you see the converted book-mobile? looked like a short-bus with a back porch?

I just got out my old phone and looked up the number for the Ferry in Davis - 252-729-2791.

Call them to get a price. It varies by size of vehicle, front/rear racks you have on it, etc. I think the price for the vehicle includes the driver, but you have to pay additional for each passenger.

It seems like it was $45 one-way for my Burb with no racks. Then each additional person was $6 or so (significant, since it was me and 5 other people).
