buddy has a toyota truck, has v6, auto, 4wd, 93 model. runs great, but when he shuts the motor off, you can hear, and see it bubbling in the coolant overflow jug, but the vehicle is not running hot. my thoughts is head gasket, or cracked head, but no oil in coolant, or vise versa, and runs good,,, but im a jeep, chevy person so any thoughts on this. hadnt really had time to do a check on it yet. thanks

could just be the radiator cap is not holding the proper pressure 16lbs so it is letting it bleed off. if not smoking white, not overheating, no oil in coolant, and not running poorly probably not a blown head gasket. but possible a compression check would confirm. or a sniff test in the raditor to see if any hydrocarbons are in the coolant system.

Could be the head or the head gasket. Depends on where the head is leaking, and what it is leaking. My guess would be some engine compression is getting into the cooling system, causing the extra pressure. It may not be running hot now, but eventually it will. Fill the coolant up in radiator, and fill reservoir up to proper level while it's cold, then crank and get it up to running temp. Turn it off and let it sit till cool, then check levels again.

If it's a closed system...it's supposed to do that. Coolant gets warm, expands into the sealed container. Cools down and gets pulled back into the rad. It usually makes a bubbling/dripping/sucking noise...

If it were a hg or cracked block, there would be other indicators.

Wrong, bubbling means air, there should be no air in his system. When it's full, it pushes fluid out as it heats up, and when it cools, it creates a vacuum and it sucks it back in. No bubbles

It depends on what his definition of bubbling is. I've had more than one person freak out before and ask what's wrong with their car because it was making gurgling noises when it's only normal. With no other symptoms at all...why jump to conclusions. You could do a leakdown or compression check though if you wanted.

Yo,
Many radiator shops can test the coolant for exhaust contamination indicating head gasket or cracket head problems. A water sample is drawn and mixed with a chemical to see if water turns a positive color. May want to go that route to see where you stand. This was many years ago, may have similar but improved version today....

Rock on.....

Bubbling means boiling typically. Its the liquid converting into a gas state due to higher temperature and/or lower pressure. The radiator cap would be a really good thing to check, since it is cheap and easy (no "your mom" jokes please).

cooling

thanks for all the help, finally got to see it, losing compression on 2 cylinders on the left head, to bad for him. thanks again.
