Cousin Needing Help 88 S-10 Motor Bad

Ok im trying to help him out but really dont know what to tell him, he bought a 88 s-10 2.8 4x4 reg cab 5-speed and after a few weeks the motor starts knocking. It finaly died and he then went out and bought another 88 s-10 4.3 4x4 auto ex cab. Ran fine when he got it but now there is water in the oil. he has parked it and his dad is telling him block prob is cracked. Is it worth looking into fixing? Could it just be the gasket? Should he just go looking for a used 4.3 motor? what years will fit with his current computer? Anyone interested in the 2.8 truck its beat up but 4x4 works

I have a good 2.8 out of an 88 S10 blazer I'm not gonna be using, with the 4 speed 2wd tranny and a bunch of other random accesories with it if your interested

Sorry dont need a whole truck, didnt pay but $600 for the reg cab 2.8 4x4 and $1300 for the ex cab 4.3 4x4 both running so trying to make fixing either cheap. Possibly trying to find someone interested in the smaller truck.
