I've been having some coyote problems on our farm lately. In located outside of Charlotte, North Carolina and they haven't traditionally been a problem in our area until the last year or so. I'm hunting them at night every chance I get and we have killed one, but there isn't enough time to kill them all. We have a dozen horses, which I'm not too concerned about - I think they can hold their own. However, my wife just got 2 baby potbelly pigs, and I'm worried about the coyotes snagging them. Their pen is only about 30 yards from the house, and there is about 200 yards of open pasture the coyotes would have to cross in order to get to the pen. There's also a 4ft tall woven wire fence that the coyotes would have to jump. Can they get over that?
What can I do to keep the pigs safe? So far, I've set up a light on a timer. Is this helping? I'd rather not burn the electricity if it's not. Any suggestions or tips for keeping them away? Thanks!!

one thing you have to do with them is keep changing your defense. they are very smart, and will learn your defenses.

Northern sells a contraption that works for deer, it's a ratcheting sprinkler head with a motion sensor. Might work near the hog pen.

Watch all areas of the farm for discarded boxes marked "Acme".

If a full size dog can jump it, a coyote can, and 4' sounds pretty low to me?

Inside the pen, do they have a smaller "doghouse" or whatever they can run in that is too small for the coyote to get in? (Is it made of brick...in case he huffs/puffs, no wait that is a Wolf, nevermind)

Gonna be hard to keep em out if they are determined...short of shutting them up at night (like chickens)

What about traps and what are you calling them with?
Some time back a guy wat telling me he ran wire on the ground all over and baited them when they pull the bait, got hit with 220 volts they made the short with the bait in there mouth and feet on the wire.......
I would just bait them and hunt them. Get a few chickens. Use a call.

I got a 270 & would enjoy the hunt pm me

coyote's are way to smart to into a trap

I live in Newton, it is kinda in the country to an extint, we have them everywhere, and it has been a concern for all the neighborhood dogs

One dog in the neighborhood, that was chained to a tree, and could not get away got mauled bad, and ended up dying from a pack of coyotes

I was talking to an old farmer down the road, he has cows and chickens and was having a problem with the coyote's killing his chickens and even a young cow

This is what he said worked for him, he moved his chicken coupe in the fence with the cows and introduced a Jackass(Donkey) whatever you call it, into the fence with the cows and Chickens

After a month of the Jackass being in the pen, he noticed it would follow the cows around, almost like a body guard. He started finding coyotes, foxes, dogs, and other small animals dead all over the pasture. He said he noticed a dog coming through the pasture one day, he said the next thing he knew the Jackass had run down the dog and stomped the shit out of it

I kinda laughed when he told me this story, but he didnt, he was serious

He hasnt lost any animals since doing this

I've heard that donkeys work great too! Anyone have a good donkey for sale?? Sorry - the woven wire fence is more like 5' tall. I'm enjoying hunting them as well, but I just can't be out there every night.

They do have a smaller 'doghouse', although they haven't learned to sleep in it yet. They honestly prefer to dig down in the hay together. It's pretty cool to watch.

yeah, i concur on the dogs. Border collies are great if you can work them like that... they can get a little frustrated living inside all the time though.

wouldnt they kill the collie or collies.

pack of Coyote's vs collie??????????????????

get you a donkey. hunting them is pretty hard b/c there super smart. but if you set some bait one night in a huge field and invite some friends with 270's and etc... i bet you could take care of alot of them lol

I have a great dog (part lab, part siberian husky - some folks call them 'carolina dogs') that keeps a look out for them, but her invisible fence doesn't reach the pig pen. She's about 30 yards from the pigs, so while she can bark, she can't get to them to protect them. Maybe I could extend her fence to cover that area?

I plan on baiting them in the next few weeks, and I'm going to be on the look out for a donkey. Thanks for the suggestions so far guys!

We used to get paid $20 a coyote in Nebraska. A buddy and I would split our time from one of us driving and the other shooting as they came across the head lights. Wild wild west. :)

I would extend the fence... also you're wasting your time hunting them.. eradication doesnt work... you cant kill them all and they have like 8 pups/year or something like that...

Also do you have any large brush piles on your land... they like those areas for dens...

Also, if your serious about a donkey I can ask my cousin where they get theirs from..

Maybe that is what you have found, or the person doing the trapping did not know how to do it.
What traps were used, there is only about 100 or so good ones and then you can go to box traps.
Its done all the time....

Can you send one of them over to me ?
The neighbors have some roosters that I'd like to see gone

I got the same problem and notice that every time I find a black snake in the yard and I drop it over into the neighbor's yard, I hear squirmish chickens hollering a short time later. Hmmm...

There is a big Coyote problem here in Mount Holy in the city. I know a lady who asked if she could have a permit to shoot inside the city and they denied her. Then they turned around and said but if you see one and shoot it no charges will be filed....WTF.

Makes sense...a permit would allow her to shoot at targets, random stuff, yadda yadda..

telling her "if you see a coyote...shoot it, no charges will be filed" means....all you can do is shoot the coyote...no targets, nothing else.

They need a coyote shooting permit now

I have a friend in charlotte that is having the same problem. They are killing the sheep. The donkey thing is funny! You gotta get one of those! We have seen a few coyotes in our back yard here in greensboro! Mangie looking dogs they are. Our neighbor has about 100 acres of mainly woods. We see all kinds of wildlife.
