thinking some of you may enjoy reading about these two items...

a friend, and former coworker, of my dad's recently retired from the police department...seemed he could think of nothing better to do with his free time than ride his bicycle coast-to-coast...

he took a small PC with him to make updates, and posted his thoughts and pics all along the way...made it to the Pacific Ocean last Thursday...69 days of riding, almost 5000 miles...

here's the journal, in case you'd like to read it...I really enjoyed keeping up with him along the way:

as a note, my dad is Ron, who shows up towards the end in Montana to ride with him for several days...

another friend of theirs decided he would take a similar, yet very different, kind of trip...similar by coast-to-coast, different because he's going to run the entire way...

he just started on July 15th...and expects to finish in early December (heading for San Diego...instead of what would be a very chilly Oregon that time of year, which is where Marc rode to)...

if you want to follow his journal, he's got it here:

Awesome!

I got to page 10 just after the cookie lady and the website failed. I'll try again later. EXCELLENT reading material!

it was down late last week for them to update servers (or something)...was supposed to take a day, ended up being down almost three...so, there may be some issues they're still working on?

Marc is a really interesting guy...I'd think it would definitely be fun reading for those that don't even know him...and some of the pictures are fantastic!!

not so sure about the running journal, though...I'm wondering if that guy is gonna actually make it...

Now I'm having to quit on page 20 and I can't figure out how to get back to it besides scrolling through ALL the pages. I don't see any rhyme or reason with the links to each page and no button to forward to a certain page? I guess I can just clip and save the link to the page I'm on. I never knew there were so many open places for bicyclists and hikers to stay for free but all by word of mouth. Dude knew how to go to locals for help!

I always had the same problem...but since I read it every couple days, I'd just go to the last page and click back a couple...

he spent a lot of time investigating...and there are tons of places to stay on the Transamerica Trail...several websites dedicated to hostel type setups, and then (as you've read) he learns a lot from simply asking other riders and the local sheriff's dept/town hall/visitor's center/etc...
