It was cold and the snow was deep. We were going to take it easy and I winced as NateDesign turned into Armor All. As bad as it was he made it up to the exit pretty easily but when he turned up the hill and hit the gas, his Superior Super 88 axle shaft decided it had had enough! We winched to the top and then helped everyone else do the same. All except Larry Smith.

I wish I had had a video camera! Those that have been to Callalantee and rode Armor All trail know how difficult it can be getting out of the creek and up to Pull Cable. That exit can be problematic even in good weather but when wet it can be a beast and with snow and ice, forget it!

After a couple of rigs winched up the exit, I stood there with my mouth dropped open as Larry Smith, orange Toyota in above pics, WALKED all the way up with seemingly no problem!

In fact, he came up the left line as you are going up the hill, to the left of the middle stump. There is a pretty good step there. He came up the step easily but had to stop half way up it because the rig in front was still winching.

I knew he was "dead in the water" then. I was surprised he made it as far as he did, but then, when the way was clear, he proceeded to continue to walk right up the icy hill with out stopping! I was FLABERGASTED! I still can't believe I saw that, sure wish I had it on video!

Joe, mudder here on the board, was riding with Larry and claimed it was his 250 lbs in the passenger seat that made the difference :)

Needless to say, with the broken axle, our day was through. awspence and passenger Hurley followed us back to camp to make sure we made it OK which we did but the tire was cambered out at a serious angle by the time we got it on the trailer. The whole rear end is probably destroyed now including the R&P and Detroit :(

All in all, "Just Another Day In Paradise" :)

wow, i bet it was beautiful up there, would not be good weather to be broke down by youreself, I think most would have enough sense not to go alone. it was prob about what 8degrees or so with the wind howlin

I just want to say I had a blast! thanks to JC and the CTB for letting me tag along. and thanks to Larry for giving me a seat in his bulletproof orange toy. I still cant believe he made it up as easily as he did! Glad I was able to meet more ppl from the forum. Will def. want to wheel with you guys again.

When I came through Boone around 8 am, it was 7*, Didn't feel much like it warmed up much.
My day started out rough, and seemed to get worse. First, my jeep wouldn't start. Fellow CTBer Robbie Mosley pulled me and got me started. Then, I noticed I was loosing antifreeze. My fault, knew I had an issue, but thought some stop leak would fix it. I had it running for a solid hour at home, and no leaks, but it was a patch, not a fix. Took the pressure off and just let the cap stay loose, that took care of leaking.
Got up to the exit of Armour all, and had to winch. all the winching, took out my battery power and had to be jumped off. finally got enough power through running it to winch on out. Then I run out of propane, second bottle was empty, so I was dead. Another Mosley come to my rescue, RJ went back to the parking lot and brought me my spare bottle.
Trying to leave I got schooled! I was having a tough time, and was just gonna turn around and let everyone pass. As I watched everyone else make it, I decided to try again. I went to my highest low range, and spun a lot faster, and made the hill I was trying. Who says old dogs can't learn.
My son Josh was having issues with his tires, lost three beads on the inside. I am thinking he has leaks. Warmer weather and a spray bottle of soapy water will tell the tale.

It was an eventful trip. On the positive side, I was thankful several things
My new Rocky boots with 800 grams of thinsulate. My feet never got cold.
My New to me hauler, it did great.
My Friends who helped me. Robbie for getting me started, RJ for getting my spare tank, RJ for getting Robbie's jumper cables, Nate for pulling cable for me and helping everyone up out of Amour all. Jason Lackey who took over for Nate and started helping everyone out.
Good to be a part of such a club.

Thanks for letting me ride, CTB. This was my first time wheeling in snow/ice..... so I wasnt sure what to expect. I kept having problems with my wheels leaking down, so I had to run 20 PSI in them to keep them from leaking around the beads. That pressure sure didn't help me in the slick stuff. New tires and wheels will have to happen sooner than I was hoping for.

I can't believe Nate's wheel held on. It leaned more and more then entire way back to the parking lot.
