okay....this may sound dumb, but.....

what is it. where can it be sourced. what are the numbers, what tranny bolts to it.

i hear alot of people swapping this in their rigs (mostly cruisers and rovers).

i sort of looked over all the tech i saw on them cause i assumed they were aussie or canadian models since the US never got any of the cool engines.

so, anyway, school me on the 4bt, im clueless.

880LBS

130Hp
265 FT-LBS
upper 20s MPG

Can be found in step vans such as UPS FED X or merita bread delivery style trucks.

Seems tranny options are pretty open as the engine can be found in many bolt patterns (i think using adapters)

Looks like HP can be boosted to about 170-190hp and torque can be through the roof to 400+

turbo aspiration.

heavy little sucker. it seems in my case anyway, dropping in a chevy 350 into my cruiser, while not as cool, may be the better way to go. especially with the cost of diesel going crazy.

from what ive seen, mileage is about the same (if not better with the 350). and the 350 is probably cheaper and easier to come accross.

Did i miss anything important? Is there anything i should consider that i may not know about?

Its not like im going to do this soon or anything, like all my othe projects, i dwell on it for 3-4 years. just like to start working out bugs early.

mileage will be according to the tire size & axle gearing. You can run on veggie oil or a blend of waste oil & diesel, try that with a sb 350. Longevity & maintenance.

Heavy, not a ton of power. they're stinky, too.

Brandon took the one out of his buggy and put in a 6.0..

I have one you can come check it out if you want. You aren't far from me.

any of you guys running them? ive read over some of the stuff on that 4bt website. in theory it sounds good, and of course members of a 4bt website are gonna be biased. just looking for some real world feed back.

my rig is not going to be a purpose built crawler but its also more than light wheeling. I plan on driving it to harlan, crozet, tellico, and anywhere else.

knowing that....4bt or 350?

4bt
4 cylinder diesel.
not 4 liters (varies some as low as 3.3 are commonly referred to as a 4)
B series engine.
If it has a factory turbo it is a 4bt.

(the 5.9 used in the Dodge is a 6BT 6cylinder B series Turbo aspirated )

This doesnt refer to any 1 engine. Thought most think it does.
The common configuration is found in bread trucks etc and the hp/tq numbers quoted above are close for those.

There are no less than 150 configuration of a factory 4 liter B series both with and without turbos. Stock HP can be as high as 315 and stock torque can be in excess of 500ftlbs (in a VEEEEEEEEEERY Narrow power band)

But you wont use that engine in a vehicle, it is non EPA certified and would not be pretty if ever arrested (6figure fines to start with)

They are literally a dime a dozen iin many manufacturing environments, but again those are neither practical nor legal for use in ANY VEHICLE road used or not. They must be stationary.

You will never get the combination of power, mileage and reliability out of a carb'd sbc.....now a MPFI you could get there, but the b series doeesnt need a laptop either.....
