So I've done a few google searches and read some search threads on here. I'm looking to get a 99-01 cummins 2500 4x4 with 90-120K miles. Would ya'll's opinion be to absolutely stay away from an automatic? I'll be towing a 84 4runner with full width D60's on 38's.

I've got an 02 cummins and had some real problems with the auto not engaging TC lock up and being sluggish up hill as in not staying in OD with a 8000lb load behind it. I installed a TCS triple disc converter and dunrite valve body/new solinods and that really woke the truck up, with the chip off even. It easily out pulled a buddy's 6.0 ford and another friends V10 dodge. If you get it, plan on buying a TC and VB along with new shift solinods even if you plan on keeping the pwr stock. I love mine and wouldn't have manual now. You don't really need a built tranny unless you get into drag racing or sled pulling making over 400hp on the ground from what most of the tranny builders I spoke with said.

Not at all. Good luck finding a 5speed anyway.

It's like any automatic trans, it's the luck of the draw (esp used).

Mine has 215k on the original auto. It worked fine till we turned the fuel up a little. It's had a vibration at low rpm/high throttle for over a year, but it's still going.

There's many problems with the transmissions from the factory. Once built correctly with a shift kit and converter they easily last 200k

I personally get tired of shifting all the time.

My full on rebuild with all the factory updates and the HD shift kit usually runs right at $2000

i have purchased ALOT of dodge and ford auto trannies. i will NEVER buy another auto diesel...probly

Sha_ba- rebuilt a customers V10 dodge tranny for me it had a nice firm shift, i really liked it, seems like it should last.

Yea and that the same trans in the diesels thats in the v10. It just uses a different converter which i found out the hard way

I have 173k on mine 96 CTD not sure if it is the original trans but it still works good.........oh Crap did I just say that.... now im Screwed

i have 155,000 on my 01 2500 extended cab 4x4 short bed. i have left everything stock and haven't had a problem yet. i pull a full size with 40's on it, on a 19ft trailer. I think it does great i can do 75 just about everywhere, i can't see a reason to want to go faster then that pulling a trailer

for autos, maintenance is the key. First thing I do on a new truck is bigger cooler, temp guage, synth fluid, and valve body. Towing hard I got 125k out of the stock one with just the above (E4OD), been chipped the whole time.

Buddy just bought a 5.9 07 model (brand new) and rebuilt the tranny at 800 miles just to make sure he wouldn't get left on the side of the road.

I know that all the diesel tranny shops have told me not to run anything other ATF+4 in a stock 47/48RE. I've seen first hand what happens to the RE's at work when we have flushed them and not put ATF+4 back in them. The shop boss's truck crapped out it's tranny within a 1000 miles and it never towed a thing. Bottom line if the tranny didn't come with synth fluid or wasn't rebuilt to use it DON'T. If the trans was in good order before you bought it and you maintain it well it should last a long time. Like Shannon said get a temp guage, cooler upgrade, and if you put a VB and TC in it get an external filter for it to and of course change the fluid every 30-35000 miles if you tow hard or just have the pwr turned up.

agree. I'm pretty anal about changing fluid. I change once a year regardless of mileage (on dino oil). Just cheap insurance. If you do heat it up, change asap.
