last week I had a no start issue, a little smoke came out from under the hood after about 10 seconds of key on. Weeks/days prior to that, the starter would crank slowly, but finally fire the engine up (98 12V Ram).
I pulled the starter and expected to find really worn contacts...they looked OK to me. I noticed the insulation was missing from the fat wire between the solenoid and starter motor, but no signs of arcing.
I brought it over to AutoZone and the machine said passed, but even the AZ guy said it didnt soud right. He did the test a second time and we noticed smoke came out.
Could this still be contacts, or should I just bite the bullet and get a NAPA reman?
