I do not know much about HDTV or wide screen or anything. I have a 32" JVC TV from about 5 years ago. I have heard that in a few years the standard TV will not work anymore. Is there any truth to this? I have charter cable but not with the digital box. I dont really have any plans on going digital either. Anyway I have been looking at used rear projection TV's. This this still a OK Idea or should I just keep what I have until I am willing to buy something new and current? That could take SEVERAL years but I am OK with my current TV to a point.

Like this used one

Not much point upgrading as a stop gap.
As for them not working,
the current "HD" set top boxes will output to old style tvs.
It just doesn't look as good.
But (at least all the Sci Atlanta ones) they will downgrade the signal from 1080i/720p/480p to 480i. They can also scale it so it's the 4:3 format (squarer TV like you have instead of widescreen) You'd have to do this with that rear projection TV anyway.

Cable co's and the like want you to go to their boxes because it lets them more closely monitor whats going on.
Also it makes it MUCHHH harder to steal cable if it requires two way authentication to the boxes.
