Well I did it. We have been talking about it for a while and I bit the bullet, did some measuring, got out the plasma cutter and the sawzall and went at it. It is still in the very early stages, but she is much lighter and I can actually see behind me now. Which in a truck that big is a huge accomplishment. Still not sure where we are going to go from here, but any ideas or comments would be appreciated. I am still pondering some different ideas about where to mount the 'pane tanks. Keep in mind -- I have two kids (three every other weekend) so seating is of a premium and I need the back seat or at least the equivalent in its place. I also have to figure out some way to mount my spare. I have lots of ideas, but I haven't nailed down one in particular. I am a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kind of girl and will just go with the flow when the inspiration hits me.

Dude!:shaking: If you only knew!
This School teacher/college professor, mother to three, Motor cycle riding momma,
former beauty Queen, Bandanna wearing, Janice Joplin guitar playing, 4 wheelin chic, ain't on the market! And doubt Peg is ready to let her go.

But I woke up hurting and needed the laugh, they do say laughter is the best medicine!

Looks good Crystal

then why did it take so long to talk about it???

j/k (I know, im a bitch the last two nights...oopps)

It does look good. really good. now is a good excuse for a trail run :)

Hey that's OK I forgive you cause we can all be a bitch sometimes. LOL I had to make sure my hubby was along for the ride to give me some extra help in case I got stuck and needed help. He is a stubborn SOB and if I had started it before HE wanted he would have not offered his help if I would have paid him.
As for an excuse for a trail run -- I never need an excuse for a run -- just some extra cash for the diesel and we are off. We go at least once a month and sometimes two.

Live well, laugh often, and wheel hard,
Crystal

PS -- I am very happily married to the man of my dreams -- well four wheelin dreams that is -- and getting ready to celebrate my 10th anniversary.

I got that same wild hair up my ass a couple weeks ago.

Hoping to have my project finished in a month or two then I'll post up more pictures.

Instead of 1 seat to fit three kids, how about 2 seats (1 jeep back seat and one racing seat) Virtualy 3 rows of seating. You could strategically put tools and parts on either sides of the seats and then do a sheetmetal dovetail to the back.

Just think, limited SHARING of the seats, With kids that will make for a quieter ride.:smokin:

:)

Ok, my turn to be a biotch! Man of your dreams?? LOL Chip read this thread to me this morning and I was thinking more like "nightmares"!
JK, you know I luv ya!
One of these days I need to get Chip and myself motivated enough to build a rig of my own!

wow, I get stuck with the Pansy's that don't understand the off road thing, and Ya'll married one that helps chop up the rig!!!!!

If I ask my ex bfs if they want to ride... you would have thought I asked them to meet my dad. I want a guy to out wheel me on a trail run, not a guy that sits shotgun with a blank look... I am now officially jealous of you two.... :squint: congrats on the great trail hubby :) :)

just thing of all the poor chicks that get dragged out there by their now ex-boyfriends.. Hit the trails you'll meet the right one... I hear match.com works too... :D

hahaha, no match for me :)

Trail rides for dates. lol. I am to busy worring about "will this flip or flop" then "ohh he is cute"

you know I am a bad driver, even in slow motion!

but back at camp when the stories, lies and thoughts of the day are told. Look around

Did we get off topic or what??

I like, dove tail that thing with just enough room to mount a spare laying flat between the outer skins.

I had more fun beating the sheetmetal off my old 78 Bronco, lots of it and took awhile to get that right "look". Once I was done it was pretty much dovetailed with that cool "hmmered" look.

Purple TJ, you should meet Ben. Once he got past busting on you about owning a Heep ya'll might have fun.

I like the flat bed part in the back, best thing to do is take your cooler, tanks, etc and put them all in a "organized" pile in the garage floor trying different layouts until you get the right one.

Pane tanks "under" the floor is best for storage but is a REAL PITA to get in/out. I would put them at the back mounted on their side, running parallel to rear bumper, where you can pull them straight out to one side or the other.

With no body in the way, set the items you will want to reach to the Most on the outside, facing out, so all you have to do is reach across the tire and snag the drink, winch kit/bag, toolbox #1, etc.

You may want to put some sheetmetal in front of the rear tires between them and the passengers just to stop some of the goo from getting flung up inside!

Looks good though! Course you get tired of this config, go Kens route and find you a nice king cab from a Ranger (or F150) and throw it on there for you and the kids! Leaves the back tubed out etc but has room for 2nd row of kids.

BUT!!! Leave the comfy seats on there, they were really nice up at Callalantee on that Saturday! :)

Sam...likes comfy seats...Hinton

Her main concern was visibility. Seats for kids. Spare tire. Mounting for two propane tanks. and dragging the rear bumper on steep approaches. Also have to consider storage for tools, cooler, and spares.

Work with that

Thanks, but I don't want to do anything "Kens route" he goes the hard way for everything and hates fords. If he had it his way -- he would burn my ford to the ground and start over with a damned ole chevy -- not that they are all bad but my blood has run ford blue since the day I was born. LOL

I do appreciate all your comments -- good ideas, thanks.

Hey Sam "I don't run propane" Hinton - mounting tanks like that usually results in the engine running dry with nearly 1/2 the tank left full.. :flipoff2:

You definitely need to utilize some of the space below the top of the frame rails/under the floor, if you are removing the fuel tank. There is one crossmember in front of the fuel tank, and one behind it. If you could move the one that was in front of the fuel tank forward (I moved both of my crossmembers back 3.5") and remove the rear one, you might be able to build a slide in setup from the rear for two pane tanks below the floor level.

Mounting the spare standing up behind your seat (or rear passenger seat possibly in your case) is also a great way to save space and maintain good visibilty.

Here is a pic of my spare tire mounting on my old Bronco:

Thanks, yeah the gas tank is gone. We are talking seriously about dropping the tanks into the space between my crossmembers and sliding them in from the back. Still working on the whole angling of the tanks idea and what not. The whole standing up the tire thing I am not sure about, because that was my problem before is that my tire completely blocked my view and being able to get to it by myself. but thanks for the input any help is appreciated.
Crystal

All I know about 'pane is it keeps my house warm in the winter. LOL. The spare could be mounted low down with one side between the rails though. Are you going to flip that rear shackle setup? I did mine that way using F150 front spring mounts (rear spring fronts that is) picked up about 4" of lift on stock springs, flex great and rode a lot better.
