Cutting fenders real soon...any advice?

I'm planning on flatfendering my TJ sometime this week. If I can get up the cojones. Right now I'm thinking of using an angle grinder for control and lack of vibration. I plan on taping the area for cutting to prevent the paint from chipping, as well as cutting below my line and grinding down to it. Any more hints, tips, advice? I've already done the LED turns in the grille.

I'm also looking around for some type of trim to cover the edge? Any ideas. I know Mac w/ his XJ used something from DPG. So I may just call Dirk.

Thanks,

when u cut leave just a little bit of space maybe .5in from where you want it to be, then cut verticle strips in it and hammer em in so the fender will stay round and they wont cut ur tires

Yep. coming back with a grinder will put a lot of heat in the metal, and could bubble some paint. No problem on my nasty-looking CJ, but it could ruin your purdy TJ :huggy:

Found the older ones i will get the ones with the new LEDS tomm

I have had good luck with a jig saw and an 18to 21 TPI (tooth per inch) blade. It will run slow and smooth.
Make sure you tape it well and you should be good. Make sure to paint the new edge with something to prevent rust. :flipoff2:
And post some pics when you are done.

I used a jigsaw with a high toothed blade.

If you use the angle grinder your going to bubble the paint no questions. I'd use a jigsaw with high tooth count. After I used that possibly touch it with a grinder or do it all at once knowing the paint would bubble then use primer sand it and paint with matching paint at Advance Auto's. If it where up to me I'd do the later because I'm impatient.

Somebody shoulda kept their day job. Yes, that's my belly, and no that's how my brother got it from the PO. It has full fenders now.

An alternative thought...

Are you doing this for cosmetic reasons or are you scrubbing somewhere?

If the former, wait till the latter happens, then look into fabbing up some tube fenders.
