Me and a buddy are talking about cutting off my catalytic converter this Saturday. I have a brand new muffler and tailpipe to put on the Jeep. The cat rattles badly while idling, driving, stalling etc and I think it may be a cause of the cutting off problem. My question is will it cause my Jeep to run any differently? I know it's going to be louder but I'm going to run some pipe where the cat used to be and then into a new muffler and dump. Thanks for the help!

The cat is there for a reason, and you will not get much benefit out of not having one on there. Plus not having a cat on your jeep will just make it pollute more and give greenies another reason to close our offroad parks.

NC state law says that you have to have a cat to get it inspected. I assume it is your '89 that you are referring to.. If I am correct, they will do a visual inspection to make sure it is there.

You are better off just replacing it. They are $80 or so(I should know, I have replaced 2 already and I need another one now!)

I found the inspection process online.. pretty interesting!

A universal walker cat from summit at $54. They flow pretty well compared to stock too.

Just "clean" out the one you have and put it back on.

Getting it inspected isn't the problem. I was just wondering if it'd make my Jeep run bad or anything. I doubt it would but just wondering.

It won't run bad.
